Reading the thread about #'s of decoys and the change in the amount of decoys put out later in the season made me wonder about my spread for ducks.

We are going to be hunting the water for opener and I was wondering if you guys put out Duck Butt decoys early in the season?? Do you mix it up throughout the day? Say, don't put any in the morning then throw some out in the afternoon.

Last year in ND, we kicked about 75 ducks out of this small pothole for an evening shoot. The mud was so thick, you could barely move in it. I set out 7 decoys, wrong side of the hole in terms of wind, strings over 2 of them. No method to the placement, no sleepers, no butts, nothin.

Ducks poured right in.

Being in the right spot is key. Decoys attract hunters. I know I have been fooled a ton!!

When it comes to weary ducks, maybe finishing that last bird for limit, the 5% of the time type thing, I think the decoys make the most difference. That being said, do I have butts other other confidence dekes just for the 5%. Absolutely. Necessary, no.
