The St croix(lake st croix) has a lot of deep water in it... Most sturgeon are caught between 15' - 35'. The biggest thing is to search ANY area with your electronics. Find key structures, and areas that are drawing in the baitfish. If you have clouds of baitfish, most often you will have sturgeon near by. Sturgeon always seem to be on the move. I have no idea how far they move in feeding cycles.. I dont think anyone really knows. The trick is to find the feeding areas, or highways that the fish are moving in pursuit of baitfish. Sometimes moving as little as 100' can be a huge different in success... even if the bottom is completely structureless. Sometimes the fish are very difficult to see f they are laying right on the bottom.. but if yu have good electronics with the sensativty up, often you will see where the bottom has been disturbed(clouds of muck?)... this is usually a sure sign of feeding sturgeon. Finding bottom transition areas can be a good way to pinpoint some of these spots.. rock to sand, sand to silt, silt on the rocks... etc.

A very good way to locate these concentration areas is to have a good spread of lines(2 lines per person allowed), and cast in every direction around the boat for a good distance. Quite often, a line or 2 in the same area will keep getting hit as the other lines will be lifeless. A short move into the direction of the active lines can be the dfference between many fish, and just a couple.

Sturgeon fishing isnt all that difficult.. a little patience and determination will eventually pay off. I wont get area specific, and I highly recommend others dont either on a public forum. Taking a trip with someone who knows the river, or hiring a guide for a day can be priceless.

Chris, nice pod-cast! That was my first (pod-cast), and it was great!

I hope to see some video of Deitz catching something that really fights other than those other things he usually targets! tongue.gif

PS...if he tries to use the crawlers 'wacky' style, set him straight will ya!
