Hey Joe, what kind of fishing will you be doing/what kind of report are you looking for? WFB is good for lakers, smallies, pike and muskie. If you are looking for walleye, you'll have to work for them a little bit in Whitfish Bay, or take a hike up the lake 35 miles to get into the better walleye fishing. Whitefish Bay Camp is only two miles from my place, beautiful area. I'm sure the owners at WFB Camp will provide you with spots to try as well as maps. If they don't have maps, and you are coming from the south, they have them in Sioux Narrows at the bait shop. If you are coming from the west/north, I sell them at my store, as well as many locations in Kenora.

Thanks Hemlock. I picked up a map at cabela's yesterday and it looked like you said the walleye were high lighted north or west quite away's, wish I had know this earlier. I think we would have went to witchbay instead. we will have a good time, smallies and pick will be fun, not much into muskies but maybe??? what about crappie, they should be starting about this time?? Again thanks for the report, any thoughts on witchbay next year?

Well, for what you are giving up in walleye, you are making up for it in location and pure beauty of the area. There isn't a nicer part of the lake, as far as I'm concerned. Crappie are within reach from there. It would envolve portaging over the rollers at Turtle Portage and boating over to the Miles Bay area. Good day trip. Or portaging a small boat from boot bay into Obabikon Lake. This would require a boat light enough to portage for about 1/2 mile...or wheel somehow. Again, the folks at WFB Camp can steer you in the right direction as well. No shortage of bass and pike right off their dock.

Rollers? What happened to the nifty little trolley system that they had?

On the topic of Lakers. I am going up to Morson on the weekend of October 5th. I'm considering bringing my downriggers along in order to chase some Lakers in Whitefish. Is early October a good time to do this? If so, where is a good area to start. Depth. Any info would be appreciated.

My mistake. "Trolley" is what it is. Boat is on bunks that are mounted to a trolley/rail system operated by blood sweat and tears by the guy turning the big wheel. Don't let it free wheel on the downward slope!!! It's like a bad backlash on a baitcaster, except you can't just cut the line. grin.gif

Lakers come back up shallow in mid September, but the season closes September 30th!!!

The Turtle Portage. Haven't used it for 4 years. We used it last weekend, caught 5 lakers, and swore we wouldn't use it again. The cable was not kinked, but the whole thing squeaked ( not greased), and the wheel had a recoil to it. It didn't do that before. The fishing was great. Maybe it can be repaired.

Sorry, haven't checked here for a while. In the past, when you stopped turning the wheel to take a break, there was only the weight of the boat to hold. Now, there is that plus the wheel wants to reverse 6" or so. To me, the wheels are dry enough that we are now stretching the cable. It wasn't like that before. By age 43 I should be ready to admit I can't do things like I used to, but that's not what this is. The fishing was great! Good luck!

Hemlock

thought I would reply to you about our trip to whitefish. as you said, the walleye bite is non exitant there, the northern were plentyful, didn't do a very good job hitting the smallies or lakers. it is a really nice area. a lot nice cabins in the area, where are you located in relation to the camp?

Our island is just south and west of Timber Island. Timber has a large beach, if you went past that at all.

Too bad about the smallies, they must've headed down deeper. Any good size pike? Did you fish for walleyes up at Yellowgirl at all? What were you doing for Lakers?

thanks for the reply. I remember timber, we tried for walleye's on a reef west of there. didn't make it to yellow girl, wish i had at least once. tried to find the lakers east of timber, a deep pool and nice reef on NE corner of the area between timber and next island east I believe. we caught most of the pike dragging spinners, the biggest was 27.5", think we would have caught larger if casting shorelines though. bob told us that the smallies were shallow so tried several different baits along the shorelines but not very good luck.
