Is carpeting needed on bunks for pontoon trailer?

I am converting a regular boat trailer to a bunk style pontoon boat trailer. Most bunk trailers have carpeting on the bunks. What does the carpeting do? Do I need to have the carpeting? My pontoons will be on full length 2x12 boards. Thanks for any help!
