kayak questions

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into buying a kayak this fall (for fishing obviously) and am wondering if anyone can help me out with some questions:

#1. Does anyone own/use one of the Sevylor inflatable kayaks? This is looking like the brand I'm probably going to go with (mostly because of the low price and fairly good reviews) and I'm wondering if anyone on the forum has anything good or bad to say about them.

#2. I'm just starting to get into muskie fishing and am wondering if tangling with 'skis is something that is at all possible with a small kayak. Will they drag you across the entire lake?

I would prefer to buy a small boat or canoe but living in Uptown Minneapolis makes it nearly impossible to store anything other than a small kayak. I'll mostly be using it in the Chain of Lakes waters and possibly in the Mississippi every once in awhile so I'm not too concerned about stability issues. Any help or suggestions are very much appreciated.

Thanks and good fishing to you all!

I wouldnt use big lures with lots of trebles however! I like my small sit -on top style kayaks for fishing city lakes. they also work great for floating down the river. I have seen some cheap inflatables, I think they get pushed around by the wind too much and I don't know how they would hold up to rocks and fish spines. Another option worth looking at is a float tube. They are a lot of fun to fish for,and you cant beat them for portability and getting into small hard to get to lakes.

I tangled with a BIG pike in my kayak....did pull me toward deeper water. I was fishing for bass with a ultralight tackle...had hooked a 12 incher, and the pike tried to make a meal of it. I looked down and saw the head and tail of the bass sticking out of each side of the mouth of this huge gator! Fun! I used the back reel rather than the drag and had him up a couple times to get a good look. was thinking maybe if i let him swallow the bass i could land it...then i thought again...no place for it to go than in my lap...after about ten minutes of tug a war, the pike let go....i unhooked the mangled bass and tossed it to the deep as a salute and thank you to the beautiful beast that made a memory...

good luck with your kayak purchase!
