looks good! Did you look at Kylersks plans? Thay look similar. If you don't mind me asking where did you buy the frame?

Did you insulate the floor?

no, I have heard way to many horror stories with doing that, its a water trap and will hold mold and mildew unless you spray foam it. thats is exactly why I did not carpet the floor either. I like to build things that last a long time. when you cut 6 holes in the floor.....it just does not seem right to insulate!

I hate to hear you mention "water trap". Especially since I just put in my layer of pink styrofoam yesterday afternoon. I'm going steel, plywood, styrofoam inner/2x4 edge, then plywood again. All green treated, just like Klyersks. It has crossed my mind that water might just get into the cracks and stay there. I hope you're wrong, for my sake anyway.

I do plan on doing a coating of bedliner on the top layer of playwood in order to prevent water from leaking from the carpet (or vinyl, haven't decided yet) into the green treated plywood. I'm also going to coat the underside of the trailer with a coating on the plywood.

If you have not put on your top layer...make sure its foundation grade plywood, more expensive, but better in the long run. I used marine grade plywood, 70 bucks a sheet, but it will outlast the frame under it!!!

I am just staring to build a wheel house out of an old pop up camper frame and have a few questions if you all would be so inclined to lend me some knowledge.

Should I insulate the floor?

If I don't insluate the floor should I use a 3/4 or 1/2 inch plywood?

Also what should i use for sheeting on the outside of the shack before i wrap it with tyvek?

That is what I have to start with I am sure that there will be more to come.

Nice job on your ice house. My buddy and I are in the process of building on this summer. The pics you provided are really helpful. We are building a 7' X 18' V-nose and I have a couple questions.

1.) what thickness of sheeting did you use on your roof?

2.) What size is your house? We are think of useing 2X3's. I noticed you used 2X2's can we get away with using them?

3.) What size boards did you use to cut for you roof angles?

We were just going to build a flat roof, but after seeing this we would like to build a little pitch.

I would not insulate floor, for many reasons, most of all, you cut 6-8 holes in it, why insulate??????? sheeting on roof is 1/2" osb, floor is 3/4 marine grade lumber, 10 times better then regular treated, but 3 times price. Roof boards are 2x6 cut to 2.5" on the ends. my house is 6-8" x 16 ft. so i think 2x2s is pleanty, just reinforce with steel straps like i did,, that makes a huge difference. I glued and double screwed each 2x2 also.

Thanks for the help. You said you cut the 2x6's down to 2.5" on the ends. Did you then run a 2X3 to connect all of the ends togehter and then you wrap your rubber roof around that?

I actually used a 2x4 to bring it down a little more, but im sure a 2x3 would work as well.

On the pic that shows that catch covers in the floor and the bench the floor is black in color. It's hard to tell if that's carpet, paint, or some other covering. What do you have on the floor?

What type of metal strapping did you use and where did you find it? Is it the strapping that is sold in rolls?

I insulated the floor in my shack. Love it! I'd highly recommend it! If you don't, I'd step up in heater size and add ceiling fans cause the lower 1/4 of your house will always be cold, there is a HUGE temperature difference from the floor to the ceiling in an ice shack.

I'm really not that concerned about moisture, if it gets into the floor in the winter, it'll freeze. When it warms up in the summer, it'll dry out. Just make sure to use treated woods in your floor construction.

Carpet on the floor also greatly improves the warmth factor near the floor. I believe the air spaces created with the carpet fibers act as insulation, much the same way old long john underwear traps warm air against your body. It keeps your floor much warmer.

I fished and slept in my permanent for 2 winters on URL before carpeting the floor. Last year was my first year with carpet. Let me tell you it makes a MAJOR difference. I can seriously sit in my shack with shorts on and bare feet on the carpet. I wouldn't have done that with bare plywood.

Ummmm... as far as wall insulation, you need to go with pink rigid or one of the other polyisocyanurates. They withstand moisture very well, and have a high R-Value. Avoid white beadboard or styrofoam for insulation, and avoid fiberglass batts at all costs. They don't do well with moisture, and there is lots of moisture in an ice shack.

I'm not sure if there is a "perfect" way to build an ice shack yet, but I feel pretty strongly about the points I mentioned above.

I USED STEEL PLUMBING STRAPPING FROM MENARDS, ITS AMAZING WHEN YOU CROSS THE WALLS WITH THIS HOW MUCH IT TIGHTENS THINGS UP, WELL WORTH THE 8 BUCKS YOU WILL SPEND!

ALSO , I USED PINK BOARD FOR THE WALLS FOR REASONS

ON THE FLOOR I USED FLOOR PAINT WITH BEACH SAND IN IT FOR TEXTURE, IM NOT A BELEIVER IN THE CARPET, AS I DONT GO BAREFOOT IN THE SHACK AND I DONT CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS, IT HOLDS MOISTURE!!! JUST MY OPINION! I HAVE SEEN TOO MANY SHACKS WITH FLOOR ROT AND MOLD PROBLEMS AFTER ABOUT 5 YEARS OF CARPET. ITS YOUR SHACK.......BUILD TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS, NOT EVERYONE ELSES NEEDS. I JUST BUILD MINE TO LAST, AND TO THE WAY I FISH IN IT....I CANT WAIT TO GET IT ON THE ICE!

Coating the floor instead of carpet is something I'm thinking about. I might use driveway sealer with sand, or something similar and no carpet. Or, I might seal it first, then put carpet on top. Still deciding.

I had carpet in my Ice Castle for two years and finally wised up, ripped it out and coated it with epoxy floor sealer with beach sand. This way when the holes are drilled you can take a shovel in there and get rid of the shavings and within minutes the floor is dry and ready for the living room slippers. Not to mention the carpet taking on fish smell, beer, tipped over spitters, smoke, etc. AXE THE CARPET IDEA!!!

Sounds like I'll skip the carpet. At least for the first season and go the sand/sealer route. I can always add carpet later.

YOU WONT REGRET IT, YOU CAN SEAL IT FOR 25 BUCKS, GET A OIL FLOOR PAINT AND PUT SAND IN IT, AND ROLL IT ON! ITS NICE ....AND IF YOU EVER THINK YOU WANT CARPET, YOU CAN AD IT LATER AND YOUR SEALER WILL JUST BE A PROTECTANT FOR YOUR FLOOR.

That right there is the magic sentence! Thats what makes building a shack so much fun- its your shack, you can design it how you want, build it how you want, and finish it how you want! Totally custom, just the way you want it!
