Ice Thickness

Lip Ripper,
If I remember right I outfished you every time we went head to head this past ice season. I remember the last time we fished last season and you were telling me the length of the fish and I would catch it. This might be a first year if I get a buck bigger than you I will admit that. I will have the pictures by next Monday for sure. I may have a great chance of catching both a limit of eyes and a buck during the same season because my deer season in the Superior National Forest is 16 days long and we will be fishing the river by next week if the weather stays cold. I will be thinking of you next week coaching basketball while I am "Rippin Lips" on the river while you are practicing. Say is it all right if I park in your garage since I will be fishing by your house anyways and you will be at practice? I don't want my truck to be out in the elements if I does not have to.

Light gear and walking, I'm out on 2.5 - 3 inches. Thats good solid ice though. Carry a rope, ice picks, and some ice grippers of some sort. And don't walk too close together. When its that thin, its not a family outing. I'm aware of the chance everytime.

I normally go out when the ice is about 3" to 4" thick.
I use to go out and check the ice depths on my dads snowmobile and bring along a cordless drill when their was no snow on the ice. But since his sled went to "heaven" I wont be doing that no more grinno.gif .
I have a sled but it ain't studded, but otherwise I wait till i see spears out their then I go out.

While no ice is ever totally safe does anybody still have the minimum recommendations again for traveling on foot, ATV, Truck, etc.? I want to get out soon and fish the hard water but want to be sure I am at least following the recommended guidelines. Thanks!

Hey Wobbler, there won't be room for you truck in my garage because that is where your WIFE always parks her car. I can't wait to drive by the river and see you and the crappie slayer sitting back to back, I mean, lap to lap! By the time you get to go fishing this winter you won't need to worry about ice thickness because it will be mid-February!

I was down to the river the other night to change water on some minnows and there was a couple of inches of ice along the shore. Should be making more now.

With it being 2 degrees Lip Ripper I bet early next week we will be on the ice fishing the river. When do you practice next week? The crappie guy will be home taking care of kids, you will be at practice, Jig O Bit probably can't so I guess it will be just me. Stop down after practice I will show you what they look like!

Lip Ripper,
You did fish more than me last year and you will probably see more ice time then me. I will never catch a 25# northern and a 10# walleye in the same day like you but some day I will catch the big fish too. Like I have said every year I just can't wait for the day I call and you can't come because of all the stuff that is said when I can't go. January 5th I will be fishing at LOW and I know you won't be!

Lower Red Lake has frozen over!! I teach at Ponemah Elementary which is in between upper and lower red lake. My classroom is on the lake side so we look at the lake all day long wishing we were out there.
