full moon

Peachy

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if anyone is going musky fishing tonight (full moon) I'm curious about how it went and if it made any difference to fish on a full moon or not. :-) I'm not a fisherwoman myself but i'm curious about the fishing and all. Hope to hear your stories and experiences! grin.gif

I'll fish clear water lakes during a full moon cycle just for the light and because its fun . I more follow the moon rise / set to time out fishing . An example was this aM when the moonset was between 4 -4:30 and there was a window of 1.5 hrs , it wasn't exactly within the window but I boated a Musky at about 6 am .

Brought it on the boat for a quick pic. , normally I'll unhook them in the net and just drop the net out from underneath them to release them without them having to come out of the water . Had a friend on board this morning who was Musky fishing for the first time and wanted him to get a good look , was hoping it would be him catching one but it wasn't to be today for him .

So basically when is the best time to catch a Musky?? or does it really depends on the Musky's mood?? Sometimes I wonder if the Muskies do enjoy being elusive??? hee hee smirk.gif

From my experience the absolute best time to catch a muskie is early in the morning on a day when the sunrise is within an hour or two of either the moonrise or moonset. I get really excited when the sun and moon are pretty much rising together. The hour and a half before and after this is pure gold.

fishing factors.

1. Weather trumps all other factors. Fish prefrontal, even two or three days out if the flow has already turned southerly ahead of a cold front. Compare the pressure readings from three hours ago (maps for this on the internet) and watch not just for falling pressure, but the rate of that fall. Some fronts come through with little temp or pressure variation...in effect just a wind change. Where is the low pressure area? Way up in Canada or tracking across MN/CN boder. Closer is better for better pressure falls. However, if the weather maps show the low is going to "cut off" and hang up over an area for two or three days, stay home as the cutoff low is the great vacation destroyer. Rain, low clouds, ugh. Don't overlook warm fronts. Further north of the warm front seems less effective, but very near the front you may have easterly winds but decent fishing. Just south of the warm front the wind will be s/se. If a low is developing and tracking along the front, all the better, but beware of potential severe weather.(Considering a basic East-West orientation and northward moving warm front) Stationary fronts wobbling over the area can keep fish biting for days, especially when small impulses either at the surface or upper levels travel along the boundary and cause minor pressure, sky condition and precip fluctuations.

Second thing is the phasing of moonrise/set with sunrise set.

This seems to be more effective in the last quarter before the full or new moon. I have watched the solunar tables for years and never really noticed any correlation to the best/worst times, but more so related to getting the sun and moon times close together. Just some observations... your actual mileage may vary.

Yes it was us in the Crestliner, did we meet you at the launch?

Dang yeah... I was the one who approached (and gesture-talked with) you... Which one were you??? the driver of the truck or the one who stayed in the boat as it was being trailered??? Matty stayed behind with his boat... Nice to meet you!!! Matty and I hit FLake again one more time last sunday with nothing except for a Pike for him and one heavy strong strike (without hooking) for me... Still working on it tho!!!

Cool cool nice to put a face to the username! Yeah Matty and I have hit FLake together 5 times so far... pretty much what we had to show for those 5 times were: 1 double follows, 1 sneak-bump, couple follows, one heavy strong strike but failed to hook, a weak missed topwater strike (probably a bass), a rock bass (matty), a pike (matty), and a largemouth bass (matty)... So you tend to hit Lake 3? or?
