Flies Problem

I have a 1 year old yellow lab that is outside in a kennel. I have noticed some black crusty stuff on the tip of both ears. The vet said it is from flies laying there feces? What is a preventative for this, right now I am putting vasciline on the infected area. Anyone else having this problem. Also one more question, what are you guys doing for pressure sores, I know they are common, he has a spot on his hip that has been treated but hasn't gone away yet and looks to be one comming on his lower leg. Need help with any info. thanks kooba.

Your vet should have a fly ointment. I bought one for years... I'll look the name up for you. Works wonders.

Another option is to apply a little K-9 Advantix to the tips of the ears. The permithrin will keep them at bay.

For flies I use either a spray repellent or a paste. One brand I use is called Swat. It's meant for horses but works great for dogs. The paste is a bit messy to use but I put it on rather heavy and don't have to reapply it as often. I've also had some luck using a drop or two of bio-spot on the dogs ears.

When you talk about pressure sores I wonder if that's what I've called hot spots? For the hot spots, I trim the area of excess hair so air can get to it and clean the area with hydrogen peroxide. Keep an eye on it and if it looks like it isn't healing it's time to head to the vet for some antibiotics.

The one hot spot or pressure spot the vet did treat with antibiotics. He shot some medicine under the skin in the affected area. I was wondering, would rubber mats on the floor of the kennel do the trick? Is that enough protection from getting those sore, I'm affraid if I get one of those Kudora(sp) beds he won't lay on that anyways.

Ken, I am currently using Skin So Soft insect repellant that another person told me to use on another site. Seems to be working, the vet in town was out of the oitment for flies, must be a common thing going on right now. Did you find the name of it yet? I'm suppose to go back tomorrow to see if some came in of this stuff, don't know the name off the top of my head. Thanks for all your help. kooba.

About the Kurada Bed, I have two of them and the Springers love'm. I even put 2 1/2' legs on one of them to get them up in the air higher. The dogs use that 1st then when that is full move to the factory one. They are worth the price.

Vasiline on thick works for the flies for me.

Here is a homemade reciepe that a guy I used to work with gave me. 3/4 white Vinegar and 1/4 Dawn dish soap in a spray bottle. I've used it the last few years and seems to keep the flies off the dogs. You have to reapply it every few days but it is cheap to make and if the flies aren't really bad I don't apply it as often.

We use the fly spray -- those flies can be brutal on dogs. I would use it -- it is sad to see them suffer with those nasty flies.

I've got an outside kennel for my lab and had fly problems as well. Several years ago I put a roof over the kennel and at the same time I mounted a 24" household box fan to the inside of the roof. I turn it on high when the bugs start to fly in the spring early summer and turn it off in the fall when the bugs are gone. This has eliminated all of the problems I had with flies, mosquitos etc... The fan is going on 4 years of none stop running for the summer months and is still going strong. It creates just enough continuous breeze to keep the bugs away.

Kooba, it's called "VIP fly ointment". It was hands down the best ointment I tried. It also would help the chewed up ear heal.
