Evinrude Motor Question?

My inlaws have a 15hp Evinrude that does some strange thing. When I try to go full throttle, it seems like it kicks out of gear, there is no more forward thrust. So if I slow the motor down it will start moving forward again. And as soon as it hits a certain speed it just stops moving forward. The motor still runs, the shifter is still in place, but its really weird, you cant' go very fast, becasue it just stops all forward thrust.

Any ideas ANYONE????

Thanks

Sounds like a spun hub.

With the motor off and in forward gear, and the kill switch off so it won't start (or spark plug wire pulled), try spinning the prop to see if it turns easily. It shouldn't turn at all. The hub or rubber insert (not sure how Evinrudes are set up) that holds the prop tight to the prop shaft is probably shot.

Hope this helps, good luck.

The other thing you can do is use a white paint marker or white out or something along those lines and mark the hub across the hub, center spline section and prop, then run the motor until it replicates what you describe and see if the line is still together.

If it's not a spun hub it could be a lower unit problem that will require a trip to the dealer for sure.
