Hi all-

My wife and I are planning a late honeymoon adventure up to lake Nipigon in search of monster lakers as well as brookies and possibly eyes or pike if the big lake is too windy. We've never been there and are debating camping out an island vs. staying at a resort campground. I would like to hire a guide/charter for the first day to get an idea of where to fish and what to use. I've got a 18 foot explorer w/ 75 yammy w/ one downrigger as well as leadcore/dipsey/deepsix stuff to get deep. Any hot lures/colors? I've done some research including checking old FM posts on Nipigon and there seems to be a few places mentioned but it sounds like alot of the charter boats go out for several days at a time. So my other question is does anybody have any charters/guides to recommend for just a day trip? It sounds like the lake can get pretty rough and from what I'm told we want to fish in the shakespear island area,would it be safer to camp out on an island in the middle of the lake to fish or stay at a resort/campground and make long day trips out to the fishing areas? Thanks for any advice,

My dad and I were up there a couple of weeks ago and had a great trip. We stayed at Onaman River Resort, and the owners were great, the fishing very good, and all in all I would definitely go back there. It is apparently the only resort that offers direct lake access (others you have to trailer your boat from the resort to the lake), and you pop out of the river right near some pretty good fishing. That is one monster of a lake, and we used their charter service for a couple of days. It was money well spent. No way in heck I'd want to head out there blind!!
