E collar

A lot of it depends on the maturity of the animal. I am probablty a little bit old school in my methods, but I teach all the basics without the collar before I start conditioning. For me, that is around 6 months, so the collar doesn't come out until a couple of months later. Be careful if you have no training on how to properly use one. You can quickly dig yourself a hole that is awfully hard to get out of if you don't know what you are doing.

Everything I've been told about using a collar was that it is used to reinforce other training. Once your dog knows all the commands and can do them on a checkcord, then you can start using the collar. Once they understand the point of the collar than you should be able to leave the check cord out.
