ants and hummer feeder...

I am fairly new to the bird feeder thing, but finally broke down and bought some various bird feeders for the yard. I know it takes a while for the birds to "find" them. I was pleasantly surprised when the hummingbird feeder level started dropping this week. I tried to keep an eye out to see the little buggers, but didn't catch sight of one. This morning it was empty. Went out to check it out and it was covered by carpenter ants. Well I don't mind feeding the tweeties, but the ants can fend for themselves. Anyone know of any tricks to keep the ants out of the hummer feeder?

thanks in advance

We just bought those ant trap deallies for our hummingbird feeders. I think the co. that puts them out is Pesky Pet (red box). The device is like a small green inverted cup with ant killer inside. They hook above the feeder. It works within hours! No more ants. Really neat and supposed to last all season. We got them at L&M (up north version of FF).

My hummer feeder is on a shepherds hook that is attached to the deck. The pole is round and is the route the ants take to get to the feeder. I spread the pole with cooking oil "PAM" and now the little ants look like Fred Flintstone trying to climb the pole. A cheap way to keep them out.

Hey, I love that idea. Not only will it keep the ants out but I can't wait to see the squirrels try to climb the pole. Should be very entertaining.

thanks for the idea
