Minnkota Trolling motor

fasternu

Question

I neesd to replace my old bow mount trolling motor and have been looking around the internet for some deals. My biggest question is what is the difference between a 12 volt and 24 volt machine? Does it mean it takes twice the juice to run it(so I would need 2 batteries), or is 2X more powerful, etc? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Any Minnkota over 55# thrust is 24 volt. If you need more than 55# of thrust, go with a 70 or 80 pound thrust unit. They do require two deep cycle batteries hooked together to give 24 volts. They will last longer because you will not have to work the motor as hard to do the same thing if you were underpowered.

The thrust requirement is usually dictated by the size and type of the boat and what you plan to do with the boat.
