The "Honk" heard throughout my house...

So, 6:30 am Sunday, beautiful morning, out with the dog, cup of coffee in hand... it is not unusual for me to see and hear geese...

but one lone errrr-hunk announced a flight of molt birds... and triggered the response only the hunter knows...

well, and the hunters wife...

Apparently the look on my face said it all as she asked, "What's up?"

My response, "I heard a goose."

Her reply, "FOR CRYING OUT LOUD IT'S NOT EVEN JUNE YET!"

Perhaps she knows me pretty good.

3 more months, only 3 more months, only 3 more months...

I have also been seeing flocks of molts in the Big Lake area. I have been practicing my pass shooting without a gun. Kind of like playing air guitar.

Really gets a guy going. 3 months and counting.

bring on the countdown....got one of my Zink calls hanging from my rearview mirror so I am constantly reminded of goose season. Never too early to start counting the days. B-dude

I have something of a similar story...Me, my wife and my 5 yr old daughter just got outside as my wife really wanted to go for a family walk, when all of a sudden my 5 yr old, stopped dead in her tracks as if she was a pointer locked on a pheasant, and with the look of peer concentration on her face, anxiously looking at the sky. My wife had a very puzzled look on her face as she didn't know what was going on. My daughter said, "Did you hear that Mommy?" Of course her reply was, "Hear what?". If you listened closely past the normal rustle of wind, you could hear some honkers way-way in the distant. I knew exactly what was going on because I could hear them too...The only reply from my wife was..."Oh for petes sake! You are your father's daughter! I think your spending waaaayyyy too much time with Daddy!". Maybe the best part of the whole story, My daughter turns to me and says, "Were is my call Daddy?" (She uses my old flute). Needless to say, the wife went walking by herself that night as we sat in the back yard talkin' to geese. I loved every min of it!

Approaching 30 years of waterfowling and have never heard the term molt flight. Now see it here on 2 different posts and on a couple other sites. Did I miss a magazine article somewhere?

I think you are experiencing the glory of the world wide web. As it goes, when the adults have babies the younger non-breeders reflock and head for some mysterious molting grounds. Some say Canada, others just say 'North'. The geese on the rivers and lakes skeedadle and vanish. Kinda like crawlers in the summer time.

That's what most use for the explanation why we haven't seen a flock since end of March, then all of sudden groups of 25 on up start flying over the house one weird day.
