South shore Lake Superior

looking for info/camping on southshore of the big lake. taking a trip with the family to the dells in july. spend a few days there and then we plan on winging it, would like to spend a few days on the southshore and then venture to the northshore for a few days. any info would be great. thanks rob

Brule River State Forest has 2 campgrounds either side of HWY 2 just west of Iron River (halfway between Ashland & Superior). I've stayed at the one just off 2, and it was really nice, as are all State and National Forest campgrounds - wooded somewhat private sites, but they're primative - vault toilets and pump water. Both are on the Brule River.

A little to the south, by Drummond is Two Lakes campground - a National Forest campground. This one is much bigger - 90 some sites on beautiful Lake Owen and Bass Lake. Many lakeside sites, 2 beaches and boat launches for both lakes, but again, primative. Beautiful campground - one of my favorites.

If you need showers and running water, Amnicon Falls State Park is just east of Superior on HWY 2. Can't tell you anything about it though -- I try to avoid State Park campgrounds if I can, though they usually have more to do -trails, scenic features, etc..

As far as private campgrounds go, the only one I know of is a KOA north of Hayward on 63. Camping cabins, water slide, pool. Trailer court-like, though it is set in a crop of pine trees. Just driven past it.

Go for the Forest campgrounds if the family will allow it.
