Go to Winnie, stay at Judds, they have a big new cabin/trailer, we stayed in it last year it was a blast! Unless you want to stay on the ice around the clock. Jumbo perch are biting year around, plus you can catch just as many and just as nice walleyes as Mille Lacs.

Good Luck

If you're already considering URL, why not do the AM at LOW ? It's only 45 minutes from Washkish to LOW... and after the walleyes stop biting around dusk on LOW ...pack up, and get to Red for the evening crappie bite!

I put LOTS of miles on my truck doing this last winter ....and plan on LOTS more this year !
What more can you possibly ask for ???

The yearly "big ice outing" is nearing us,
and me and the guys are considering a change
up. We have been at Mille lacs the last couple, and are considering other options,
like maybe an Upper Red/ Winnie trip??
Anyone else do a split trip like this.
Granted, the "walleye factory" is close
but you can only take so many pictures,
plus all the pigs look the same. The lack of jumbos, or any perch for that matter, last
year,is one of the reasons we looked to
try other places. How bout Leech and ???
Thanks for any ideas.

Ps Rainy/LOW are really too far

We hit the Blackduck and Upper Red Lake area. We stay at the Drake Motel in Blackduck which is about 1.5 miles from Blackduck Lake which we hit in the morning and early afternoon for walleyes and the jumbo perch (some of which have gone up to 12 to 13 inches and then in the afternoon it's off to Upper Red for the huge crappies and the hopes of getting a monster pike. We like staying at the Drake because the rates are reasonable, the rooms are clean and comfy, they have a fish cleaning room, they do fising reports on their HSOforum, and last winter did fishing contests. They love fishing, so it usually doesn't take too much to talk them into joining you on the lakes and show you the latest hot spots. Plus Winni isn't too far away either. Their site is drakemotel.com.
