Question for Northern Guys

We've been boating a lot of chewed up Pike lately. Is this a spawning thing? Even the fish over 36" seem to be pretty well banged up.

As you guys are seeing this in the Gunflint area as we are seeing it on Upper Red, both low water level areas. This year the pike didn't have much room to move in the super shallow water and took a beating.
