Regular fishing pole for ice fishing

Okay, I'm a very lazy ice-fishing guy...such that I've got a lounge chair for ice fishing all night. So many ice fishing poles are too short if I lay on my back and the longer one's about 36 inches are all way too stiff. So I'm thinking, what if I use a short UL regular spinning rod fishing pole 4'6"? That should do it.

Yeah, that's where I get a little creative and have to be careful. I position so that the hole is off to one side, but on occassion my foot had sometime dipped into the hole. Good thing for gortex boots...As long as I can hook the fish, the rest isn't as much of a concern as long as I don't have to get up,...,grab the rod to entice a strike and get nothing. I want to be just laying there doing the lazy thing.

Ahh, so after testing out several UL spinning rods at 4'6" I've come down to conclude that the St. Croix rod is the one to use. It being a Primeire model only frown.gif says, I don't get the lifetime warranty on it. I'd wish I could get an Avid or the G-Loomis one in that length but those come only in a 5' length. I tried a bunch of Shakespeare Rods, Pfleuger, Quantum, Cabelas, Ganders, Fenwicks, and it came down to the St. Croix. Ah well,...On top I got the Shimano Symetre 750 to match it. It was a toss up between Pfleuger President and Medalist, but going with weight feel the Symetre was a better match.

Funny, I broke my St. Croix UL right above the cork, took off the first guide, added some new cork, and then cut the rod down to the guide below the tip. It's now my laker ice rod for spinning reels. Flexy enough to have some fun, and so far... enough backbone to land a ten pounder.

That rig should suit you well on the ice, unless you plan on sight fishing. grin.gif
