Perhaps Vex Tech will pick this up or perhaps another one of you knowlgable fisher peoples!! I am seriously considering buying an FL18, and was wondering if Vexilar has had a recall of any of the original units at the retail outlet. I really don't want to buy one and then have to send it in for the version 2 update. Any info appreciated.

I work in Retail Fishing Sales.
Vexilar has not made a recall on the FL-18's, the upgrade is for the consumer to have done on their own. I have heard they will fix it while you wait or you can send it to them for repair.
I also own a new Fl-18, I have not had mine updated yet. I will problbly take mine in after ice out.
I really haven't had much problems with mine at all, only a few times the bottom jumped up a foot on the AZ mode. I don't think it is a big deal at all.
I used it on LOW and Red Lake in February for three straight days with no problems at all. The AZ mode really worked great on LOW where the walleye and sauger hold tight to the bottom. I'm glad I upgraded.
Fluke or no fluke, Vexilar will stand behind their product. smile.gif

The fl-18 problem is a soft bottom issue. On lakes with rock and sand bottom they work flawlessly. There is some kind of double feedback thing going on with a soft bottom lake. First layer reading and second layer reading. I had my fl-18 updated at the VEX shop in Bloomington and it took less than 3 minutes. My vex just needed a software update and the others need a chip. Call vex and they will let you know the turnaround. They really stand behind their stuff. Check around there are places that are blowing out their winter stock. Also try hsolist. It is a great time to buy one. i bought mine there (fl-18 propak for 349$ in jan) But if you have to pay full retail I would wait until next year. Good luck!!

Thanks for the input guys.
Skeets: Just got back from LOW and no doubt that split screen would be great. The FL8 works good, but does not do what I've heard the 18 will in regards to the bottom huggers. I caught a lot of fish banging the jig on the bottom and then reeling up a couple of feet and they would chase it hard. I've got three people interested in my 8 so the cost is not going to be significant.

Bill,
I was a Zercom owner that got fed up with the interference problem with the Vexilars.
I traded up, I feel. I got the version 2.0 and have experienced no problems and am very satisfied. The duel cone is worth the extra $. Real nice machine. -nunzio

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
