After four trys...Finally!

Well it took 4 hunts but my first turkey fell to an arrow.

Hunted the D hunt and it all came together in a matter of a couple of hours. I went down on the first day ahead of my brother and buddy. Got to the spot I wanted to hunt at around 10:00 a.m. I positioned myself with 3 good sized trees in front of me with open field in front. I stuck a single hen tucked in close to the edge so they would have to be right on top of me before they saw it. Sat down on my folding chair and started calling...nothing for about 30 minutes then saw 3 birds crossing a field about 3-4 hundred yards off to the left. Called as loud as I could and they turned and started walking toward me. This was agonizing to watch them meander their way toward me at their good ole pace. Whenever they looked like they were losing interest I would give a couple of soft yelps and they would resume their slow march towards me. I lost sight of them just below a dip in the terrain for a few minutes and gave a few very soft yelps when all of a sudden they just popped up within 30 yards and walked direcly toward my decoy! At this point I was cramping up from not moving for what seemed like forever. Well forever lasted for another 15 minutes while 2 jakes and a big boy walked around my deke until they lost interest and finally started to move past one of my draw back trees.I waited until the 2 jakes passed the tree in front of me and when big boy's head was behind it I drew back and...immediately the jakes freaked out and ran about 20 yards out and did the head bob and weave but big boy didn't see what they saw. After maybe 2-3 minutes...seemed like an hour he finally stepped out right into the spot between the 20-30 yard pin and I let him have it. Wow, after a perfect shot right above the beard that sucker ran for about 10 yards and tried to fly before dropping like a rock. Only took about 5 minutes to find him. Then I almost had a heart-attack from the adrenaline rush, had to sit down for a few minutes. Talk about hyperventilating. This was WAY beyond catching a big muskie!

I should have started this turkey hunting thing before I reached the half century mark grin.gif 22 lbs. 9 inch beard 1 inch spurs. Steve

    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
