Best small heater for Clam Jr.

chucker

Recommended Posts

Just purchased a used clam jr. works great(fits in my rig) for 1 person any thing mor than that and it is really tight. I've got a big buddy who doesn't get in to it...he wears it.

My coleman lantern works good above zero, but there are nights I'd like a little more heat.

With the very limited floor space, does anyone have any suggestions for a very small good heater?

I own the magnam & med. otters,I use 5lb tanks.I put together a small brass pipe system& run lantern & small sunflower or buddy heater at the same time.works great! Go to hardware store, look in brass fitting. You'll need 1-3/8 T connection,1-3/8 90 degree elbow,2-3/8 theaded pipe 3"long,2-3/8 theaded pipe 2"long,3-3/8 couplers. You also need 1 propane tank connection, and 2 one-just-like-silly-me.fittings(male fitting like whats on 1lb. tank.)light& portable. grin.gif

I have a 5x7 ,i use a hose for my sunflower cooker type, keep the tank outside, and have plenty of room, I even made a mount that attaches to the heater, same (connection) as the one that comes with it,but way smaller, put one of those orange handled clothespin clamps on it and I hooked it to the center pole on one side, a foot off the floor, havent burned the wall yet!.. knock on wood

I have a coleman focus 5 and a friend has a mr. buddy. We both have shelters the same size as yours and both heaters fit and work well. The only problem with the focus 5 is they don't sell them anymore. I'm considering buying a mr. budddy myself. They're nice because they have a pilot light, they're rated for indoor use, and the back of the heater doesn't get hot so you can place it next to the tarp without burning it. Gander Mt. had them on sale for $80 the last time I was there.

I'd go with the buddy. I use the disposable 1lb tanks. Perfect for a small portable and it's safe for indoor heat. I use it in my flip and fish and my 4x6 portable.

Good luck.

I GOT A MR BUDDY FROM THE OL LADY FOR CHRISTMAS THIS LAST YEAR AND I LIKE IT. I ALSO HAD A FOCUS FIVE THAT I USED FOR YEARS THAT FINALLY TOOK A dump. THE BUDDY KEPT MY SHAK NICE AND TOASTIE I HAVE ALSO USED IT IN THE GARAGE QUITE A FEW TIMES FOR CLEANING FISH OR WORKING ON THE TRUCK, IT REALLY THROWS A LOT OF HEAT. THE AUTO SHUTOFF IS NICE TO HAVE AFTER A FEW BREWS, JUST IN CASE.

Depends on the weather outside. If it is fairly decent out I will use my Mr. Heater Jr w/1lb tanks.. Heats the place up fairly well. Strong winds and low temps I use my Paulin-sunflower with a 5lb tank. Sounds like Minneman has a good set-up. Good luck fishing all.

I've got a Fish Trap II two-man and use a Coleman Black Cat, which throws out 4,000 BTUs, I believe. That's not enough for true cold weather, say colder than 10 above, but in combination with the Coleman lantern I've never gotten cold using both, down to 20 below. And I believe your Clam Jr. has a floor in it? Yes? If it does, it'll be warmer in there than the trap, which has the ice for a floor. Black Cat's a lot cheaper than the bigger ones. Of course, if you may upgrade your shelter someday, the Cat wouldn't be big enough. Stuff to consider.

I have the little 1 man Otter (Small Den) and have been using a Paulin small portable heater. It is a size down from the heater/cooker size and attaches directly to the propane tank. Maybe 4000 BTUs? $30 retail. Heats the place great and makes the 1lb propane tank last for quite a while (6 hrs or more). Very quiet, does not leak gas. The basic heater/cooker models are too hot for such a small portable and they often have "blow-by" or incomplete burning of the propane when you try and dial down the heat. People who I know have to keep turning the heater on and off as the portable heats up. I have been very pleased with the purchase.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
