Need Shelter Help

I'm going up to Winnie this weekend but don't have a portable. Does anyone have any ideas on how to turn a tarp and a 4'x8' sheet of plywood into a make shift portable for the weekend. Looking for a little bit of comfort. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Just bring a couple of 5 foot long stakes with you and drill holes(not all the way through) in a U- shape and face the bottom of the U toward the wind. Put the stakes in the holes, fill with the ice chips to secure them, and wrap the tarp around the stakes to serve as a windbreak and leave the plywood home. You will be amazed at how the windbreak will minimize your exposure and let your heater warm the area to the point you can fish without gloves.
I grew up in Hibbing and when we hiked into a lake, this was the shelter of choice because all you had to bring was the tarp, and cut brush for the stakes once you got where you were going.

Believe it or not, you could be cited for failure to register your makeshift shelter. I was told in no uncertain terms by one officer that even if you haul a cardboard box onto the ice for shelter, you had better get a license.

Sounds strange, but I find it also strange that portables require licenses.

In your case the $12.50 for the license is probably cheaper then the sheet of plywood. You could just slap that on your tarp.

If I drag my fish trap out to the lake (because I have all my equipment in it) but don't flip over the top, do I need a license for it? I am esentially sitting in sled with built in seats. How about if I take the tarp off of it? Then all I have is a glorified sled.

Esentially you need to license a tarp. If it provides you 'shelter' from the elements you are supposed to license it. (Do I need a license for my coveralls?) I have heard of people fishing from their truck getting ticketed for not having a shelter license.

I think they need to change the law to require a license for any unattened shelter.

It used to be you either sat on the ice with a 5 gallon bucket, or you had a 'permanent' shelter. Now there is a huge area in between with the different portables.

keep it to 2 sides and you wont need a shelter lic. Drill 3 holes in a triangel shape 5 feet apart, stop before you go through. Put a 2x4 in each hole and back fill with snow. Tie your tarp using the gromet to the 2x4. Wrap the tarp around the middle 2x4. Tie the tarp to the last 2x4.

I find this conversation to be quite entertaining for the simple reason that I can relate to it. Us poor college students are lucky to have a lawn chair to sit on at the time tuition is due. I beleive students should have license discounts similar to senior citizens. I once found myself trying to construct a makeshift shelter out of my otter sled. grin.gif

Surface Tension is right, if it has three sides, and a roof, you have to license it. Two sides, no roof, no license required. I used to have no portable either, and I've done almost everything that has been mentioned. I used to have only a sled, and when I'd go, I'd take a couple peices of 2x2, and use them to prop up the sled at an angle, and sit behind that. My girth outgrew the sled...Ha!! I now have a portable.

How did your portable work out this weekend? I did the tumbleweed thing in my portable this weekend. Thank god the Vexilar can't fit down an ice hole. I fished Winni on Sunday nothing was biting near me. I can't imagine that much fishing was done on Winni on Saturday. Better weather coming!!!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
