Lotwfisher
Crow Lake is a very vertical lake with alot of structure. You will want to pick up a map wherever you can if its your first time on the lake. Keep in mind this lake has not been charted by the MNR so the best map you can find is a satellite image one. And with all maps it does miss the odd rock. Be sure to ask the owners of where your staying for info or any help pointing out some rocks the map may have missed. The water is very clear and you will be able to see the hazards if you slow down a little. Your earlier trip may allow you to fish the trout shallow depending on the surface temps(just ask the camp owner or someone at the tackle shop). But for your July trip I would be looking for structure in the 60'-100' range for sure. My first start would be to get some Buzz Bombs in the #3 (my fav. color is white with blue strip). Look for points that have deep shelves or mid lake humps. Dont be afraid to fish the entire water column as the trout will chase baits for long distances. Feel free to post more questions and I will try and help you as much as possible.
hawghunter001
Lotwfisher, Thanks for the reply I appreciate it. The Buzz Bomb seems to be non existant down here but I suppose the shops up there have them. I read about the Heddon Sonac also but here the heaviest I found is 3/4oz Jun would be fine but a little light for Jul. Where I go up at Grassy Narrows I use a Cowbell or dodger with a minnow on a JB strip on, the frozen minnows get a little soft but I imagin live bait at Nestor wouldnt be a problem, Ive used suckers and a spot tail shiner when I freeze them I put them in sardine oil really smells them up. At Grassy the wind seems to really affect the trout much chop at all and they shut right off and of course we fish right in the middle of the lake and cant find them in the sheltered areas is crow similar with the wind, the calmer the better? Ive tried the Terra server to get a satelite veiw of the area but for some reason it wont lock on Nestor Falls. Allens has a placeto launch over on LOW, Ill have to take the fatheinlaw over there for some eyes and crappie that will be different to catch crappie in canada.they dont have them up at grassy least ways they dont talk about it if there is, I know theres splake around some where but cant find out where. enough for know thanks much, later
Lotwfisher
the 3/4 sonar will work too. I just suggested buzz bombs cause it is a common lure usually haha. The cow bells and other trolling methods will work too. You should be able to get Crow Lake Shiners in Nestor Falls on your first trip. Jigging is just my most common way cause its easier to set up and stuff. But I do love downrigging when I get the chance. As for the wind I do like a little chop on the water. Crow is shaped like a large L. If you fish the north end then strong north and south winds will hinder your mobility. If you fish the east end then east and west winds at high speeds will give you problems. If you find a map of Crow you will notice areas that will become difficult to travel with high winds. With the very vertical parts of Crow you shouldnt have a problem getting out of the wind and still be in deep enough water to land some trout. The crappies can become difficult to catch on LOTW's in the summer time but again it is dependant on the weather. I dont fish them much till september when the fall cools the water. Once again if you have anymore questions I will be happy to try and answer them. Good Luck.
hawghunter001
Lotwfisher, Thanks again,Im not 100% sure of what you mean by a vertical lake. Im really excited about learning this area its close enough to me that if I wanted to I could make a weekend trip of it, Most all the lakes here get so crowded and the weekends with boaters jetskis etc its hard to fish that why I love Canada you can always find a peaceful spot and still catch fish! Lotwfisher
Ya there is a nice lack of crowds in these lakes. By saying vertical I mean the lake goes from shoreline to 100 feet in the length of a boat. It give you a chance to get out of the wind and fish close to shore and still be in deep water. hawghunter001
thats what I thought it was but I wanted to make sure. There is a spot on Wonderland (a lake up north more) you can reach out with your rod tip and touch the rocks but its like 120' deep, its been a lot of years since I've been on that lake. What are things like across the road on LOW that area is called whitefish bay right?
Lotwfisher
Whitefish bay is similiar water to Crow, very deep and clear. I suggest fishing it the same way. Also there is Sabaskong bay which is shallower, dark, warm water..It doesnt have trout but it has walleye, muskie, pike, crappie, and perch. hawghunter001
We're staying at Allens lodge and they said they had a access on LOW about 2.5 miles from the lodge and I never thought to ask what area that was but the guests go over there for walleye. I cant find maps around here of course but I was looking at satelite veiws and I think I found the area of hwy 71 does srow go to the north and then east, LOTS of islands is there a string of small islands that run mostly east all the way across the lake, I have another post on here about Silver Lake up by Kenora I see Hemlock lives in Kenora I go by that lake going to grassy narrows and i have never seen a boat out there its a big lake and was wondering what was in there. I take it the Lotw in your name is Lake of the Woods right? That is one huge lake on our end by Baudette on the ice there are thousands each day going out its crazy the first time i went there I saw the caars coming out and I sware it looked like rush hour in the city bumper to bumper for an hour and a half at least I havent been back since.
