Reels and poles??

Recommended Posts

Stupid question from limited muskie experience. Generally speaking what action types should I have for throwing bucktails, topwaters, magnum raps, and suicks?? what about reels??? I have a 7 foot rapala extra heavy with a 5.1 gear ratio shimano corvalus. The other post on reels got me thinking what type of rod and reel is best suited for what task. Right now I throw everything on one setup. What is it best suited for out of my mentioned lures?? What set ups should I have for the other lure choices?? Or is it personal preference??

Your Rapala extra heavy doesn't have the circumferance that you will want for throwing the bigger baits. (I am guessing that it is more of a bass rod?) It might be more comfortable to goe with a fatter rod with a longer handle.

As far as action goes, just about everything that I have is a fast action. Whick means that the rod bends closer to the tip. For trolling you might want a more moderate action.

Most guys like a MH or heavy (depending on the rod) for throwing bucktails. It also depends on the size of the bucktails. A little longer rod is a good thing for leverage and figure 8's as well as casting. 7 1/2 ft is a good length.

I like a shorter heavier rod for jerks. 6 1/2 heavy. I like it to be heavy for solid hooksets.

For topwater I would use a 7 1/2 heavy again depending on who makes the rod it might be different.

For Cranks I like an 8' heavy

It is still all personal preference but that is what I like.

Some brands,

St. Croix

G Loomis

Guide Series

Shimano

South Bend (Bass Pro) I believe that they make teh Pete Mania Rods

Dimondback

Fig Rig

Hope this helps,

John

Yeah thats what I guessed too Thanks for the help though. My rod I got now is Definetly a muskie rod though...The handle is long enough to tuck under my arm pit and it seems to work just fine for whatever I throw. It feels like I could catch a Huge Shark with that thing!!! Im the guy whos uses six pound line for bass and walleye most of the time and 20 pound of pike. I never go heavier than 30 which is what my muskie rod is rigged with. I dont understand guys in bass tourneys who spool up with 25-30 pound cable S*** cuz thyre fishing weeds...I like a fight myself and its kinda sad to see those guys set the hook and skip a six pounder across the water and horse it into the boat! frown.gif
