Guest
Hey Guys, I am from Nashville, Tn (no I am not married to my sister) and I am going to be vacationing in Taylor, MI. I am a big fisherman and have always wanted to try icefishing. I have read a great deal about ice fishing on this forum, but I would like to know about equipment. I have already bought five tip-ups and an auger and need some recommendations on rods, bait, places to go. Basically I need a "starter kit" list. I will be fishing for 5 days and don't really care what type of fish I catch(just as long as I'm on the lake and not at the mother-in-laws.Thanks alot,Matt------------------H-e-r-e fishy fishy fishy
Guest
MattIf you are fishing in Michigan you won't need all those tipups. Only 2 lines, per person, are allowed while icefishing Michigan's waters. I like to jig alot so I would put 1 tipup in and jig with my other line. As far as jigging rods I prefer the Genz ice rods made by Berkley.I have the 24 inch rod for 2 and 4 pound test lines and the 28 incher for 4 to 6 pound test lines. I also prefer a ShimanoSedona 500 spinning reel when Icefishing. This reel has an extremely smooth drag systemwhich is a must when fighting a big fish on light line! The anti reverse feature is another reason that makes this reel so good! Check out the DNR's HSOforum for Michigan---> www.dnr.state.mi.usYou can purchase your license online and get other information you may be seeking.Oh ya, If you are close to Dundee, MI. don'tforget to stop by the new Cabelas outlet. It's worth the visit.....don't forget your camera!.................Good Luck![This message has been edited by Reeleminn (edited 02-06-2002).][This message has been edited by Reeleminn (edited 02-06-2002).]
Guest
I find some type of locator(Vexilar) to be very necessary. I'm not sure how familiar you are with sonars, but if you start fishing with one, you'll never fish again without it. The only problem is, Its expensive. But I don't know many anglers wthout one. Do your homework on locators and you'll be into to the bigguns in no time!
Paul Rohweller
Hi Matt, If you go to the online store here and look under scenic tackle theres a starter kit thats right up your alley. contains a quality bobber, jigs etc. Its a great way to start an ice fishing taclke lineup or its just about all you need to catch fish in the north country short of a quality rod and reel. Guest
Wack, if you are planning on staying aroundTaylor for a few weeks, try bringing your boat. You will find the Walleye in the DetroitRiver. Vertical jigging with a minnow whiledrifting down the river can produce a nicemeal in short order. It hasn't been a banner year for ice insouthern MI.Good LuckSturge
The Chemist
Since your amount of time spent on the ice isn't going to be that much considering where you are from, when looking for rods I tend to stay w/ the ones that are around 20-30 bucks. Usually Shakespeare. things you will need: bobber stops, split shot, varying types of jigs/hooks. I went to school in Ala and alot of the stuff I use up here I used down there for shellcrackers and crappie. Also make sure you have a couple (between 2 & 4) of each in case you find something that's hot and by some odd chance have somethig come and snap your line. Good luck, you'll love it.
