as i am primarily a shore angler for now, and a lot of times things you want to look for when targeting cats is deeper holes and the areas that surround them, i was wondering if there is any way to tell where these spots are if you dont have a boat to check depth around the area. thanks!

You will find most of the deep holes on the sharp bends. If you look at a map such as google map and look at the satellite image, it's fairly easy to pick out the deeper spots. As a rule the long straight sections are shallow and the turns are deeper. Try to find structure near a sharp bend, whether it be a snag, rocks, wingdam, or even manmade structure (bridges etc). Place you bait near this structure without getting hung up and wait for a run. Simple huh?

Also, most of the cats I catch are in pretty shallow water, but they do relate to that deeper water so I think it is important to have some deep water nearby.

Find the prey, and then you've found the predators.

I think Darren covered about everything.

Most natural rivers follow the deep hole in the bends, shallow run on the straight patterns. When man gets involved with wingdams, dams, and other unnatural sturctures to control water, things change a little bit, and sometimes for the better.

I guess if I could pick one place to fish from shore, it would be some kind of eddy. For whatever reason, I like eddies. They are typically found in conjunction with deeper water although it might not be much deeper. So you get a great current break & deep water. Is it summer yet?

I just cruised through Grand Forks today and the Red is waaaaayyyy up out of its banks. For the Red, it isn't really high but it is just amazing how much that river moves up and down in the spring.

Don’t get too caught up with finding depth. Structure is more important. If you can find structure in conjunction with depth then you are in business but most of the time if you're night fishing, flats will move pretty shallow looking for dinner.

If you have a little money to spend, they make the sonars that you tie onto you fishing line and it relays the depth to a screen on your wrist. Just reel your line in and you should see the strutcture. I had the privilage to use one once and it was very neat and told me exactly where to cast.
