Color preference on lures?

Got my new rollie and helen magazine this past week and paging thru trying to pick up some new baits. On this forum over and over when someone has asked on different colors of bucktails, often the answer has been "as long as it's black it will work". Does this hold true to surface, gliding or trolling baits as well. There certainly is quite the variety of color selections offered but my tackle box can't hold them all. How do I narrow down which colors I should have? crazy.gif

Color selection can be tough at times and there are gerneral rules that most people go by.

1. Stained or dingy water use brighter colors

2. Clear water use natural colors

3. for night topwater use a black profile bait, for all other night fishing, I want the vibration (chater bait)or thump thump action i.e. Mojo XXX

4. Match the forage

All are good ideas and can help when you are buying baits. However as every muskie fisherman knows, nothing is set in stone and some things will drive you crazy. (but thats why we love it)

surface- just about everything that I have is black or some combination of because I only throw top water whent the skys are low and there is a chop or dusk to dawn.

Gilde baits- depends on the water/forage. To me there is no set rules for glide baits. It is more the action and placement that counts.

Trolling- I try to match the forage the best I can.... usauly ciscoes or Perch.

Bucktails- I have every size and color under the sun. Mostly it depends on the water and what type of mood that I am in. But yes Silver/Black can be good.

Hope this helps,

John

You can beat this topic to death and get nothing but right answers, because every body of water is different. There are however, some colors that do well just about anywhere you fish them. They are,

Crankbaits, jerkbaits and gliders.

firetiger.

Shad/cisco/whitefish. (All very similar)

Red/white.

Sucker.

Perch.

Jailbird or bumblebee (same thing).

There are also bucktail colors that seem to work everywhere, they are.

Black/silver.

Black/orange.

black/chartruce.

White/silver.

White/red.

White/chartruce.

Red/copper.

Firetiger.

Topwaters,

Any color, as long as it's Black! smile.gif

Have fun shopping!
