Cyberfish
Has anyone ever speared a burbot? or do they stay too deep? I love eating those things, and there is no limit. I would start spearing if I could get me some of those delicious cod!><}}}("< ---><!>
Crappie Kid
Anglers and Spearfisherman alike should all be letting those big Pike go for several reasons. Unless your going to put it on your wall. I personally would need a Pike to be at least 20lbs before I would have it mounted.
esox
Those new reproductions look just as good and sometimes better then a real mount and they last forever. The fins always look nice, the scales don't lift, they hold their color and they don't have that odor. My 20 went back to swim again, after some pictures, but she still looks as good as the day I got her, hanging on my wall. Never had a single regret either, more then happy to do my part so others can enjoy the feeling too.
esox
Perch JerkerWay to go, it's guys like you that make it possible for others to enjoy catching a trophy. We released a 42" on a lake that "doesn't have northerns" west of the metro.
justin
the spear action has been better in the last week or so, dont know about for you but the fish i seen early ice came in and hit fast and hard, didnt even have a chance to grab the spear unless they came back for another hit, last week now i been getting the typical slow move in which gives you that instant adrinilin rush, (cant spell to good) i think with the little snow on the ice is helping but good luck out there, and dont mind the anti-spearing people out there we will never change there minds, however i did get a woman hooked on spearing this year wooooo hoooo! Perch Jerker
WOW, this topic was resurected from a year ago.As far as spearing this year (2002-03), in the 6 times we've been out...IT SUCKS!!!!!We've seen 3 northerns and not one over 3lbs so far (on a northern metro lake). We've resorted to using tip-ups to catch some pike dinners. I've caught & kept far better northerns than I have while spearing. Anything 8lbs and smaller is food & anything larger is either released or allowed to swim by. A 22lb 42" northern released is my best pike so far. Steve Foss
After wading upstream through the current of all these threads, I wish I lived in Minnesota so I could get a spearing permit.Notice, I didn't say so I could spear. I lived in N.D. for years, and have moved to Wis. For more than 20 years I've bought a non-resident Minnesota season fishing license, because my family owns a lake cabin north of Bemidji, and I've fished Minnesota all that time, and still do.Only residents, of course, can get spearing permits.I want one not because I want to slaughter big pike, but because it's the ice fishing equivalent of bowhunting, which I do alot of, and there are a lot of big pike on the lake our cabin is on. I know. I've seen, caught and released them. What a rush that must be, luring in pike and watching them and their behavior through a big hole in the ice. I've watched them through my 10-inch hole, but it's not the same, I'll bet. Thanks for educating me on this, you guys.
tdk
Spearing is a lot like deer hunting. When you see a northern just out of range looking at your decoy sucker,it can really get your heart pounding. It doesn't matter how big it is, the same goes to when you have a northern come in and slam your decoy and swim off with. It's a rush. As far as people I know that are against it are the same ones that won't shoot a doe or smaller buck during deer season, big buck only. They'll take 8 to 10 big bucks out of area a year. That has to make a hell of a difference in the gene pool. A friend of mine will try to tap a northerns head with the spear and not spear it. It leaves litlle white marks. They've seen the same fish come through the hole a couple of days later. Kind of a catch of playing catch and release.
