replacing bow locator

I lost my Lowrance last year due to rain (really nice) and just purchased another locator (non Lowrance) and was wondering if i need to re-run the power cord to the battery? It seem a bit redundant? can you just snip the old Power off and splice in the new?

Please advise.

Thanks

Yes, you can just cut the old one off and re-use the supply. At the very least I would make sure that it's a fused connection.

If it were me I'd re-run the wire to wherever the power source is (chase the old power cord back to wherever it hooks up to). More connections can sometime spell more trouble in the future, but that's me.

Marine Man, thanks!!! if you think it would be better to run a new one, how do I do that? it is a totally enclosed bow (2002 Tundra). i have never done anything like this before. Would it be better to just go somewhere and have them do it?

Thanks

The best way to do this is to run new wires, but the easiest way would be to just splice into it and make a good sealed connection. In which if you make it a good sealed connection it shouldnt ever give you any problems. If you want to run new wires you could see if the wires are anchored anywhere, just grab the wires by the battery and give them a little pull, if the wires up front move, attach the new wires to the old wires and pull them through. If the wires dont move you will need to just run wires where you can hide them the best. I would just cut and splice the new one in if the wires dont pull through the hole.

The previous post covers it pretty well.

I might not have been 100% clear either though.. what I would do is to follow the old locator's power cable (it's not long enough to reach to the rear of the boat - you'll have to see where it's spliced in) and cut the old power cable (and whatever connector they used there unless you can reuse it) out and hook up your new power cable.

I would not replace the power cable from the battery in the rear to the front, however they got power up there.
