Question

i have a lms339 and it has power and works great except when i start the motor it turns the unit off. once the motor is started i turn it back on and it works great again. it is wired directly to the battery and is grounded to the boat by a screw. do you think moving the ground to the battery will help my problem? any ideas?

You should ground it to the battery. You shouldn't attach it to the boat as thats not an electrical "ground" like you can on a car. This could cause some bigger issues down the road such as hull deterioration if your sacrificial anode isn't doing it's job.
