I am a snowmobiler....but if you are using it for just fishing buy a 4 wheeler.
If you get a 4 wheel drive model it will go through about 18 inches of snow, and is good on bare ice too. This is good at first and last ice.
It also can be ridden in the summer, so making payments on it in July will seem a little easier, considering a snowmobile would remain parked in storage.

If you can only have one or the other, get the ATV for the reasons mentioned, but come on now PCG the only way your gonna move in 18" of snow on an ATV is with a running start, then you ain't gonna get too far before you are stuck backing out on the tracks you just made. deep snow will hangup an ATV everytime. If a person wants to make anykind of longrange trip, the snowmobile is the only way to go if there is 10 or more inches of snow. Granted my only experience is with Polaris ATV's, but them Sportsmans do go thru the SH*T. My suggestion- get both!

putting your truck in the drink now that dont sound good! i would agree that a 4-wheeler is money well spent compared to a snowmobile. as far as what make i would consider a polaris. they have a automatic transmission so you dont have to shift and push button 4-wheel drive. I have had one and my buddy still has his along with most of my relation. they have alot of different sizes to pick from like most brands but it all depends on what you going to use it for. If your looking to just screw around and do alot of trail riding then i would suggest a scrambler. there fast and 4-wheel drive but they dont have a low gear. But if your like me and want to be able to use it to trail ride and make it a work horse then i would go with a sportsman. there alittle bigger but there isnt much you cant do. hopefully i was of some help. now i probably started whats the best ATV war! lol

I drive a Honda Rancher. Its all time 4 wheel drive, and you can get electronic shift if you wish. It is alot lighter then a Polaris wheeler and alot better balanced.
And it goes through the snow, believe me.
As for snowmobiles, I ride Polaris, and for toting things around a 500 class sled is your best bet if you choose to go that route.
My 2nd choice would be Ski-Doo..

this will mainly be used for fishing
i have had experience with arctic cat 4 wheelers and they get hung up really bad
i feel like a 4 wheeler is a better all around investment but i dont want to always be digging it out of the snow
it seems like they are only good for the first couple weeks of ice when their isnt much snow

Sorry to hear about your truck. Just trying to get to the shack to catch some supper, and you drive in a "SMALL"spear hole.
If I were in your position I would go with the 4-wheeler.1)due to lack of snow the resale value on a snowmobile is going to be about half of what you paid for it, and with the wheeler that is not true.2)If it ever does snow you can always buy a plow for the Wheeler, or trade the wheeler in on a sled.3)the wheeler is a four season vehicle. I have never owned a 4-wheeler, just 5 newer sleds. A 4-wheeler sounds nice right now. As for what brand to get, now days all snowmobiles and wheelers are generally the same. Hoped I have helped you out some how

Like Fisky said,

Ultimate icefishing rig = polaris widetrack

There are times when a 4 wheeler would be better, like this winter, but overall tough to beat a sled

Put yourself in one situation: You are 5 miles out on Mille Lacs. Storm comes up and you stay in your house to ride it out. You wake up to mucho snow. You want to cut accross the lake as to AVOID LAKESIDE RESORT. You need a sled. For portability and reliability, ya cant beat a sled.

So, this is what you do....Sleds are dirt cheap, so buy like a 99' or 00' model, 500 or 600 class, for around $2,500...And then buy a 4 wheel drive wheeler. Then get a two place trailer and haul them both....Can't go wrong now can ya?
And yes, by every possible method, AVOID LAKESIDE RESORT.

If you are going to buy a Wheeler just for fishing and you are not a hotroder buy a honda. They will last for years. I have an 86 with tracks on the back of it and they will go through 18 inches of snow no problem. Never had a problem. Even carrying a deer on the back. I would go with a rancher or a foreman. You will not go wrong with a honda. Hands down the best wheeler you can buy. The only money I put into mine is oil change every year!!

Well I can see it with one of those spendy track conversions. But with the beans you're gonna spend on a track kit you can pick up a good used snowmobile no problem. I had a track kit on a '97 polaris sport {2WD} ski's on the front end, A neat ride for sure. Not sure what these conversions cost these days. I spent 1,200 bucks back then, can only imagine what it would cost to stick'em on all 4 corners on a 4WD???
