anyone got a booya recipe

Recommended Posts

well I've never shared this yet... so I might as well start by sharing it with 24,000 people! grin.gif

Our family recipe (and I bet it's what you are looking for!) My brother and I have hosted some dandy booya parties and everybody raves over it. They ask for the reipe and we just grin... below is the recipe, add to it as you see fit... we never follow it verbatum, there always seems to be a little variation, but it more or less follows this as the foundation.

2 gallons water in a LARGE stock pot

5-6 pounds fat free beef roast - boil till tender, then shred

3-4 pounds Chicken - boil, cool, cut off bone in chunks or shred

To the stock add:

2 - lbs Onion diced large

1 - head (stalk) of celery chopped

1 - 2lb. can of chopped tomatos

1 - pound of carrots chopped

1 - 2lb bag of mixed vegetables

1 - bag of frozen lima beans

1 - bag frozen green beans

1 - bag frozen yellow beans

1 - green pepper diced fine

5-6 potatoes diced

1 or 2 - tblsp. Tabascco

2 tblsp. worchestershire sauce

1 small rutabega diced

1 can V8 juice

whatever seasonings you like. I use salt - pepper - garlic powder and some Emmerils essence. Don't over do the seasonings. You can add more while it's cooking. just taste it as it cooks and add more if needed.

add shredded meat added back in

Bring back to boil while stirring, reduce heat and cook on low for at least 4 hours. I usually cook mine for 8-10 hours. Stir occassionally. Serve with hot sauce (for those who like it spicey) and oyster crackers and garlic bread.

I usually use wild game in mine. I'll add a small beef roast and 1 whole chicken to 5 lbs of wild game. Don't worry what you use, it all tastes good in there!

This makes a lot of booya. I fed a huge group (20?) that were pulling docks this fall and still had 1 1/2 gallons left. PERFECT! leftovers! Freeze them... it's just as good as the 1st time serving it. I make mine on the turkey fryer with a Big/Tall stainless steel pot.

Give this a try and let me know if it's what you were thinking of.

Good Luck!

Ken

To make booya, you wait for fall and clean out your freezer before hunting season starts. Grab all those leftover creatures you've been promising to cook, the ducks and geese and venison and beef roasts. Throw everything in a really big pot with some water, add some veggies and tomatoes, cook it for a few days and invite friends that will bring the beer. That's pretty much what my grandma did, except she invited family, who always has beer.

sounds good! i thought that ox tails were a main

ingredient? maybe the wild game would give it the taste.

seems booya recipes are top secret with everyone!

Yeah we usually have A beer when we cook ours too! grin.gif

BBQ - try adding one piece of smoked meat... I usually throw in a smoked pheasant or duck or chicken... you get the idea... really good booya is cooked on an open wood fire and has a slight smokey flavor... I cheat! shocked.gif

Have fun!

Good Luck!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
