Crow Lake....been there?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

Thinking of hitting crow lake this late summer/early fall. Lakers and muskie, maybe some smallies. Anyone have any input or words of wisdom on this body of water? Sounds like night trolling is the ticket for muskie?

Just looking for some info from anyone that has fished this before. Positive and negative. Checked out mUskie bay resort and it looks very promising. Just wanted to do a little more research before pulling the trigger ya know!

Thanks alot.

I have been going to Crow for a lot of years now and it is a gorgeous piece of water. The fishing can be incredible or impossible on any given day. The late summer early fall period can be very challenging. I haven't had the greatest luck with the smallies that time of year as they are generally super deep. Muskies can be had trolling at night and deep during the day. The lakers are what I usually spend my time on and they are a blast. Either jigging or downrigging gets them that time of year. Muskie Bay is a great place. I will be there next week for the second time this winter. Paul is super helpful. Last summer we stayed at some private cabins further out in the lake. Very nice too. If you are looking for a more private setting (as we were) I would recommend them as well. Since there is no links allowed I can get you the info if you are interested. There are also many other options if you struggle on Crow. Lake of the Woods is right across the street and there are a couple portage lakes that are very good that time of year too...

Thanks, would like to know about the more secluded cabins....are they through Muskie Bay Resort too? What is the best time of year in your opinion for the best fishing? Mostly muskie, trout, some walleye and bass?

What is in the portage lakes? How about bringing my boat, are the hazards well known?

Thanks for the tips.

Crow Lake is great and you will look hard to find better service or nicer people than you'll find at Musky Bay. I have only fished up there a 8 - 10 times but we rarely end up getting skunked and we are almost 100% musky fishing. There are some huge fish in that lake and the fishing can be amazing. Best trip I have had was in early August two years ago when two guys boated 7 muskies, (smallest was 32in and four of them were over 40 in), lost at least 15 more fish and saw over 60 more in 2.5 days. Of course not all trips are like that but it gives you an idea about the number of muskies in the lake. Lots of lake trout as well. We usually can manage to pick up a couple for dinner if we can spare an hour from musky fishing. In fact I will probably be up there in two weeks for my first winter trout trip.

I was lucky enough to go there several years ago. From what I recall, there was a resturant on the highway that we went to occasionally. The cabin I stayed at was a good boat ride from the mainland. It was an old hunting lodge that had many out cabins and was owned by a guy named Kitchel. Right across from his cabin, there was a white, bald island that attracted sea gulls and was called gull island. Not far from gull, we would jig for trout and use silver buddies and sonar type lures and really nail them. We went up right after ice out and also would troll shallow and get trout on minnow harnesses. Went there once in July with my very young kids. My kids wanted to swim and it was freezing. The island and cabins I stayed at on this lake were unbelievable! Very nice!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
