Attaching Auger Extension

Just wondering if you recommend leaving the collar on where you mount the male part of the extension into the auger(collar at the power head, and then a coller at the other end)?

I suppose it doesn't matter much, but I thought I'd ask.

I'm leaning toward leaving both on.

I like to throw a bit of black tape around the collar to keep the hex bolt from falling out if(when ) it loosens.
