Wind

Recommended Posts

Personally I find wind the biggest headache when fishing for cats. I fish the Red River at Lockport Manitoba. I fish from a boat and find it quite important to keep the bait in one spot, it prevents snags and seems to get alot more hookups. Usually there is enough current but if there is a strong enough north wind the boat starts to swing. I have tried to shorten up the amt of anchor rope but that still only helps some of the time. Does anybody have ideas on how to stop boat swing especially in the wind??????

I tried a 2nd anchor at the rear but that would cause snags when we brought our kitties in.

What would happen if U put 2 anchors out up front and tied then about 2 to 3 feed from the bow?

The Red River at Lockport has some high banks and when the wind is from the north it will actually blow the boat up stream, wierd I know but it does.

I havn't tried the wind sock YET but maybe that will be the answer.

What we have been doing is picking around bends in the river but that limits our locations and some of the prime spots. Only 13 more days left before the season opens, but who is counting. Good thing I just got a new lab puppy yesterday.

Hey buddy I got the answer for you.... I took on another new sponsor.. Tamer Group by JNB origionals.. They make the drift bags and then Bait tamers... I have been useing the drift bags on the back of the RP.. now if any boat will swing it is the RP.. with one or two bags out I cut that swing down big time.. as long as you got current they will work great.. You just have to make sure you are anchored in good.. I got the two small bags so far.. One most of the time does the trick but when it is really windy I use two, one out each back corner.. walla.......

Them bait tamers are awesome.. but of course we use live bait here... when Im done fishing I can keep the bait alive in the river until I fish again.

Say have you tried useing leaches up there for cats????? Too bad we cant bring any of them up there.. I got a real good source of some JUMBO leaches.. just picked up a pound agian the other day.. man they are big..

Hey canuck is that a yellow, choc. or black? I have 8 12 day old labs, 5 yellows and three blacks, i only have three yellows left, 2 males an one female if ya know of any one looking post me. They are great dogs, good for you. We have similar problems on the rainy, a north wind blows us up stream, weird i know but kinda funny. Two anchors fix the problem but we aint fight'n 25lb walleyes eithier that do what they want when they want, those socks are a good though, good luck later boar

Boar: She is a yellow. I may know another guide that may be looking for a lab pup. I will be talking to him later this week and will mention it.

When ever anybody for this bb comes up to Lockport give me a shout as I would love to meet them in person and maybe we can either wet a line or whistle or at least I can offer some areas that we find are producing.

I don't like 2 ancors but the wind is a pain at times. Shallow draft boats tend to spin in the wind no matter how fast the flow is...Big Pain.

Canuck try a 6 gal bucket on a short drop once. Kinda-Sorta acts like a wind sock...but on the cheap.

It pays to rig a second "Dump Rope' off the bottom of the bucket to make pulling it in a snap..yet it is not too bad to pull in. If your in fast water...then it gets heavy fast.

Hey Canuck...ask Shanon what he learned last year about using Drift Socks on the Red. wink.gif Tee-Hee!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
