Dave
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) hasbegun motorized access planning for six state forests inwest-central Minnesota this past September. It is very important that ATVers send in comments regardingthis process! Most of this group of state forests is southof Hwy 2 which means they WILL be classified as LIMITED orCLOSED. We’ve been told that the DNR has received dozensof negative comments regarding this area and only ONEpositive comment to keep ATV trails open. WE NEED TO BEACTIVE IN THIS PROCESS IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO ACCESSTHESE AREAS ON ATVS.The planning effort, which the DNR is calling the "WestCentral Group" of state forests, includes the Lyons,Huntersville, Smoky Hills, Two Inlets, White Earth andMississippi Headwaters state forests, as well as scatteredforestry lands in Douglas, Todd, Otter Tail, Wadena,Becker, Mahnomen, Clearwater and southwestern Beltramicounties. The West Central Group is a cooperativeplanning effort among the DNR; Clearwater, Becker andBeltrami counties; and the White Earth Band's NaturalResources Department. The DNR and cooperating agencies have co-hosted open housesin September/October 2006 so the public could reviewpreliminary base maps of inventoried access routes andCOMMENT ON CURRENT AND DESIRED FUTURE PUBLIC USES(motorized and non-motorized) of forestry-administeredlands within the project area. The planning team will usethe public comments to refine base maps and producepreliminary proposals for motorized use classifications androad and trail designations. The goal of the coordinated planning effort is to createconsistent access plans, which will best serve forest userswithin the West Central planning area. While the DNR,tribal and county land managers will ultimately developtheir own forest road and trail plans for the lands theymanage within each state forest's boundary, the agencieshave formed this interagency working group to bettercoordinate each jurisdiction's plans. Public comments received throughout the planning processwill be shared among cooperating agencies, so interestedparties need only submit comment once. Likewise, maps forthe entire planning unit are available at:http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/mgmtplans/ohv/designation/status.html scroll down to the bottom to “WEST CENTRAL GROUP” to viewmaps.
