Abu reels??

Guest

Recommended Posts

Looking for a new reel, that will pull double duty for bass and northern and also some cats. Will go on a 7.5 foot rod. Will be replacing a shimano corsair 400. I know the abu's are good, but I would like a reel with a thumb bar. Do any of the abu's have this? What would be a model that is about the same size as the shimano,(by size, I mean actual size and line capacity). Any help would be awesome.
Thanks

The abu 5600 is the largest reel with a thumb bar but it is only about the size of a shimano 200. The 6500 series is about the same size as the 400 and a great reel but it doesnt have a thumb bar. Hope this helps.

Mr..tennesseean

There is a recall on Shimano Corsair take it to a shimano dealer and they will fix you up if your having problems with it. ABU"S have pressed on handles and I have pulled them off setting hooks. A great real just bad handles.Metro

The new ABU EON is a VERY sweet casting reel. Go with the larger model for live capacity. I used 2 EON reels for 2 seasons now, of hard use on cats, walleye, pike, you name it, tons of cats, no problems at all.

The EON is light and reduces casting fatigue, SUPER SMOOTH, and almost imposable to FUBAR once you understand how to set the overrun. That is easy to do too, if I can figure it out....anyone can.

Well, I finally went with the Abu 5600C4 spooled up with some 30lb. stealth. I liked the thumbbar and decided i really din't need the capacity of the corsair I had before. Half of my power-pro never touched the water anyway. The one thing I've had to really struggle with getting used to however is the high gear ratio. I am still reeling way to fast. I'll get used to it though. It's a great reel so far. Thanks for all the suggestions

Well since we are on the topic of abu garcia reels I thought I would check to see if anyone has used the Eon Pro 3600. They retail in stores for something like $350, but I found and ordered a brand new one off hsolist for $159. I figured I would give it a whirl and if it doesn't work I will just go back to one of the other 9 Abu Garcia reels I own. Come to think of it, Abu is all I own.

I know the 3600 Eon Pro is a fairly new reel, but I have yet to hear a lot of feedback on it and am just curious to see if there are any opinions out there on it. I should recieve it in the mail within a couple days, can't wait to test all 11 ball bearings....

Take care and good fish'n!

I would be wary of anyone saying they will sell a EON Pro that cheap. They just came out and I have never seen any at any form of a discount price. Even the pro's pay $300 for the new Pro EON, at a discount.

Be sure it is not a regaler EON, because that is the price they run new. Big difference between the two reels as you know. Be darn sure that hsolist guy is selling what he said he is. They both are great reels, just don't get took is what I am saying.

I love the Abu Garcia reels I do have which include two smaller baitcasters and a spinning reel.

Now I need a new "Big,Mean, and Nasty"! I was looking at the new Abu 7000 with the lever drag. I honestly can't decide between that and another Penn 320GT2....Decisions! Decisions!

I would'nt worry at all, I've seen eon pros sell new in the box on hsolist at that price and even a bit cheaper for quite a few months now. Some of those reels were also sold by people I've done some buying of spendy reels from with never a problem. Can't tell you much about how they work but I can tell you they had some problems with the early regular eons. I think they may have solved the problems though.

Tennessee
There are a few 6500 size series with a thumbar out there to be found. 6500CB comes to mind....These were made for and sold at Cabelas. Also out there is a Bass fishermans signature edition this year. Can't remeber the guys name but it was someone famous. If I remeber right there was a 6500 with thumbar in that lineup. 6500AB is one also I think. There are others too from a few years back.

Dark30 look at the Special Edition ABU 7000CL Big Game series once.

7000CL-1.jpg

I got one from the ABU product rep when he was out cat'n with me a year ago or so. Love it, a serious reel. It has a clicker that you would like Dark30, a loud piggy on the run kinda clicker with and duel adjustable line run settings. A wide spool with a large capacity 325/17 for heavy mono. A boat wench single grip handle with a 5.3 ratio to take up line quickly. A very smooth reel with a nice finish. Under $200.

The early EON had a light metal gear on the end of the level wind, it proved to be a problem stress point.

They upgraded it to titanium gear and pin on the Pro, and also upgraded it on the first series EON reels.

The whole design of the EON was made to be far lighter and stronger then any other reel made. A few bugs were likely and expected. They had them in the field with us guides a year before they hit the mass market to test them for stress.

If you have an early model and it has a problem ABU will retrofit it with the new gear and clean up the reel free of charge. I stressed out one of the early models and had a new one in less then a week. We expect such design failures on new products, the Eon had less then many others have had. I have had no new problems since with any of the EON reels I now own.

I still have an old Abu Garcia Ambassaduer from the 80's that still works like new; I have found them to be afforadble, durable, and relaible reels. They make a few cheaper ones; but I've found the Cardinal series for spinning to be decent as well.

You betch-ya Dark, you can check it out when you pop over for the Hop.

I just may be able to find ya one or two Dark? wink.gif

Yes you are correct fiskyknut, the 7000CL pictured above is the production model Big Game series reel, not a special edition 7000CL. It was the best illustration I had handy at the time.

The "Limited Edition" 7000 looks much like this 6500CS-C4 but with a few more cosmetic whistles and bells. As far as I know, they are not currently a regular production model?

The 6500CS-C4 ain't too shabby either Dark. It has saltwater construction so it is beefed up a bit for a 6500. They run New $150 +/- if you look around some on the net.

Dark30 lets chat on what you need when you Hop over. I have a little black ABU book you may wish to sniff through? I think I can hook ya up with something you can use? grin.gif

Just an update:

I just received the EON Pro in the mail today and all I can say is that it is one very nice looking reel. Black with carbon inlay. The guy I bought it from on hsolist apparently has quite a few of them on dutch auction (24 available) I think. I will be putting it to the test tonight. I guess I just couldn't pass up getting my hands on one of these at a $200 discount by purchasing through hsolist. The guy that has them for auction is pretty reputable with over 2000 transactions and a 99.7 feedback rating so I wasn't really concerned about being burned. Now off to give this thing it's first REEL test.

Thanks for the feedback!

Just got back from the trail run.

What a beautiful afternoon/early evening on the lake. A small disclaimer, I am a walleye fisherman. First night with the reel in action. 6 keepers between 16 and 19 inches and more importantly 6 walleyes released between 22 and 24 inches. I don't usually keep this many fish, but my father-in-law, an avid ice-fisherman was hurt seriously on his job as a block-layer last week and is now recovering from a bruised spinal cord and 5 disks replaced via "the knife". The walleyes will go to a nice fish fry on Sunday for the entire family.

A great break-in for the new reel.

Thanks again for the feedback!

A couple of wks ago I picked up 2 7000 Abu's as I was finding my 6500s were not standing up to the constant work on our kitties. I was able to take a 6500 and 7000 Salmon fishing and found the 6500 much better as the retreive was MUCH faster but with catfishing I really like the 7000 as they just feel much more sturdy. I hve only landed about 40 kitties with them so far and will wait alittle longer before really passing judgement on them. Don't get me wrong I like the 6500 but they were breaking down too often. I picked up a 7000 and a 7000C as one has 2 and the other 3 ball bearings and wanted to see which was better but to date I can't notice any real difference YET.
