21 Year old falls through the Ice

Sunday morning 21 year old Tyler Magnan broke through the ice on Round Lake north of Brainerd. He fall through around 11:00 am while driving his ATV to go fishing with a friend. They both fell through but his buddy was able to crawl out and call for help.

The ice was thought to be about 5" thick but the spot where they went in was only about 1/4" the day before.

Please be careful out there, they are only fish and not worth the risk of falling through. If you must venture out on early ice wear a life jacket, have saftey precautions in place in the event of an emergancy and never go alone.

All too often I think we make the mistake of thinking that if we measure the ice in one location it's the same throughout. How wrong that is! Last year at one time on the north side of battle point on Lake Osakis we checked the ice in the bay around the launch and found it to be about 12" thick. Seemed safe enough. We got out more into the center of the bay and started drilling only to find we were on 6" of ice with our vehicles. Luckily, we were on ATVs and not driving a heavy truck.

About 10 years ago a van for one of the area resorts in Baudette went through the ice in late January on LOTW. Seems the ice had lifted and separated leaving about a six-foot wide fracture and then a thin film of ice resealed it. On top of that it snowed lightly overnight hiding any evidence of the fracture. The next morning the vehicle unaware of the frature went through in 27' of water. The only survivor was the driver that managed to escape through the hatch on top of the machine.

You can never tell.

that is a very sad story. I happen to know the kid he was fishing with it was a friend of mine. I do think we should all be carefull especially when there are children even teens involved.
