Propane lights in Perm

I'm thinking about adding a couple propane lights in my Ice Castle. My reasoning behind it is I would save on my batteries at night and plus I know they provide quite a bit of heat so during the day I could save on the battery for the furnace.

I have the plain thin paneling on the walls. Would it be too hot or will I need to make some type of shield/reflector?

You should have no problem mounting it to the wall. I have one and the back has never been warm. You may have more of a problem with the panel above the light. They do kick out a fair amount of heat.

Growing up we had a converted camper/fish house that had them in it. I know during the afternoon and evening we didn't have to run the furnace at all with the heat from the lights. Do you think I would need a shield near the cieling to reflect the heat away from the cieling or would it be ok?

Extra shielding couldn't hurt. If you keep them about 8 inches from the ceiling I would think you would be ok but someone else might have a better idea. A friend of mine took his out and went to all electric a few years back. Last year I helped him put them back in.

You lantern should have a heat shield on it already. Make sure you place enough distance between your lantern and the ceiling. If you feel that you want to have the lantern higher, then a heat shield would be necessary. Just use your best judgment as to the adequate distance.

Good Luck!
