Just a quick post to remind people to ask about ice conditions before venturing out. There has been an open spot on Round all season, now today at about 11:30 a.m., there was an accident. I was told that the peron or persons were airlifted to a hospital. Not good.

One 21 year old fisherman from Brainerd did drown. They were on a 4 wheeler, one made it out and after an attempt to tie clothing together and throw it to the other, he wasn't able to grab ahold. Very sad, I knew him he worked (a couple of years ago) at the baitshop where our guide service is based (S&W Bait).

Very sad news. Atv or not, it doesn't sound like walkable ice either way.

BRAINERD, Minn. — A 21-year-old man died Sunday after his four-wheeler broke through the ice on Round Lake north of Brainerd.

The victim's name was not immediately released.

The Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department said ATVs driven by the victim and a friend both broke through the ice around 11:30 a.m. The friend pulled himself out of the water.

Emergency workers found the victim's body about 50 minutes later in 19 feet of water. He was pronounced dead at the hospital in Brainerd.

The sheriff's department said the area where the men broke through the ice had been open water two days ago, and that on Sunday the ice in that area was only about a quarter-inch thick.

I grew up next to his grandpa. Even when you think you are safe, you must be careful. Please exercise caution out there.

We have a warm week coming up.

I was on a lake today with 8-9 inches of ice, but out in the middle there was only 5-6. We saw a truck drive across the other side. shocked.gif

It was a tragic incident, Tyler was a young man that knew the in's and out's of fishing that most of us aspire to. Please take this accident into consideration when heading out onto the ice. He had knowledge of the lake, he had knowledge of the ice. He did not have knowledge of the spot he went through... Please take the basic precautions - Life Jacket, Ice Spikes, Rope. Compared to everything else we spend our money on, it's pretty cheap. Tyler loved to fish and loved to share fishing with others. His family requested that memorials be sent to the "fishing has no boundaries" program through Camp Confidence. (The same organization that is the main recipient of the Brainerd Jaycee's Ice fishing contest.) Be safe and enjoy fishing, this is the message he would want to carry on. Thanks, BC
