The elusive Flathead

Recommended Posts

I had the benefit of enjoying a evening fishing for the elusive flathead catfish, with a very knowledgeable river rat, Fishhead. But once agian I left without landing a "Big Ugly".

As soon as we started fishing, Dennis was a top of the cats, 3 channels within about a half hour, the largest around 10 lbs, and a Goldeneye worthy of a couple pictures. I managed to hook into a tree, and pulled it half way to the boat before my hook fianlly came free.(That IronSilk is some strong stuff)

As darkness approached Fishhead took me up to a hole that had produced many "Big Uglies" in the past. Where I landed a nice channel, and Fishhead landed the only Flathead of the evening. Not real big, maybe 8lbs, but a flat none the less. The water temp had dropped to 56 degrees so that may have slowed the big guys.

When it came time to leave Dennis made me a little nervous, by strongly suggesting we put on our life jackets until we got threw a tricky part of the river, but like a experienced river rat he got us threw, easier in the dark and thick fog, than we did in the day light.

All and all not a bad night, good company and conversation, 1 Flathead,4 channels between 8 to 10lbs, and several smaller, and a goldeneye that would have had Backwater Eddy drooling.

Thanks Fishhead! I hope we can do this again next year.

Hi Sarge! Glad you had a good time! Fishhead is a great person to spend time with and he knows his way around the river!

The Elusive Flathead....I would agree with that! They sure don't jump out of the water but if you spend the time you'll find a few. I know we have a very good Flathead population in the Minnestoa River but the Channels just seem to be a little more "available". I caught only 4 Flatheads over 30 lbs this year and spent alot of hours fishing for them....Of course, each hour fishing was very well spent!

We'll get you hooked up next year for sure! Too bad you couldn't join us for the Catfishing League or maybe....somehow....
