Greetings Minnesotans!

My wife and I are going to do an impromptu road trip and go to the Ice show!! I have a little vacation left, and we are discussing a possible move to Minnesota within the next few years so...why not hit the ice show and then do some travelin thru the state so she can see what winters are like there?

Would love to take an afternoon at the show and get together with any FM ers who might be there..Any plans for any organized meet and greets at the show?

I know its early in the winter...but what the heck. I would love to know if any one would be willing to host a day or 2 of fishing after the show, assuming there might be ice somewhere. The plan is to drive straight thru to the cities...do the show then start loop north and then back west the following week....Brainerd, Duluth, Grand Rapids, LOW, Thief River Falls then west.? We will follow the ice if there is any.

I am hoping for some serious cold weather 'tween now and then!!!

I plan to be at the show once again this year. I'm not sure what day I'll be there yet, but probably Saturday afternoon sometime. Always a great time at these shows.

We have talked about it before, but with everyone's schedules and some of the staffers working the vendor tables, makes it tough to do.

You are going to have a great time taking it all in!

As for fishable ice at that time of year, the northern part of the state might have fishable ice.

I can't believe you want to move away from God's country. My grandpa has a cabin on Middle Thompson Lake and we go up there every other summer. Good luck with your perch fishing this Feb. Most of the pike are gone but now some Musky have shown up.

lookin forward to it Matt!

Is this a big enough deal where it would take a day and a half or 2 days to see it all? Or would one solid day do it? I want to attend a few seminars if there are any, and if there are historically any days that the "deals" are better, would that be the last day so they dont have to pack up and haul everything back to the store?

I need some tips fellas!!?? Is there any kind of schedule out there that any one knows of?

Thanks

Speaking of the Ice show, does anyone know if Todays Tackle will be at the show? Heck I would like to see what sponsors of this site will be at the show too, I would much rather give my business to them than to someone else not supporting! So all of you sponsors out there that will be attending please sound off, I'm sure we would all like to stop and show our patronage! grin.gif

The past few years, Bruce Mosher from Today's Tackle has been at the ice show in a booth with product. He's usually right behind the Thorne Bros booth.

Marcum Technologies has a booth.

Nilsmaster is usually there. The last few years, Troy "Mr. Bluegill" Peterson has been in the Nils booth. Stop and check out all the awesome lures that Nils carries that you don't generally see in stores.

I'll be at the show sometime. Normally a bunch of us FM guys try to hook up and talk.

Todays Tackle will be in the Thorne Bros booth again this year. Bruce usually sets up a pretty cool display and if you get the chance to pick his brain then I highly recommend it, the guy knows his stuff!

There is a lot to look at when going to the Ice Show. Just about everything and anything you could ask for when it comes to ice fishing. A very fun event.

BuckettButt,

Middle Thompson is a GREAT spot, unfortunately, its also close to the Flathead Valley which is experiencing explosive growth. I cant take the way the place is growing, the kinds of people moving here and the big city problems and troubles they bring with them. Top that with the fact that NO-ONE can agree on how to handle the growth and the Last Best Place is quickly becoming The last place I want to be...

Anyone that wants it...you can have my spot!

I would say if you took a good 1/2 day at the show, you could see it all. But that is me talking and I've been to the show regilously for the past 4 years- if not longer.

If you have the gift to gab or you are looking for a specific item to buy, then it might take longer. Otherwise if you give yourself a good 1/2 day at the show, you'll be all set.

Dietz- If I remember right, you had to do the same gig last year and missed out on the Ice Show?! I even stopped into Cabelas last year and said "hi" ! grin.gif

I'm hopiing to be there Saturday again this year. It's nice bumping into all the FMers there. I'll also stop by and say hi to Deitz again. laugh.gif

Cabelas is also a good place to stop in unless you don't have any money left after the first stop. laugh.gif

    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
    • I went ahead and watched some of the MLF coverage.  Wheeler didn’t make the cut but the bigger story was the Poche/Avera fallout.   Kinda funny listening to both sides of the story and putting together the scenario, reading between the lines.
    • Yeah we fished like 6 or 7 lakes down here.
