Dogs chasing deer regs.

What's the law on destroying dogs chasing deer,I had heard there was some changes made to not allow action during the hunting season.I would assume this would be to protect bird dogs that became seperated from owners but would apply to all dogs.Curious because some red coat idiots shot our neighbors' dog and are claiming it was chasing deer.I heard the shot and saw the dog still thrashing on the ground only about 10 yards from the guys in a plowed feild and they are claiming it was chasing a deer, there was no deer involved.

Found this on the DNR web site. Page 29 of the hunting regulations.

Dogs Pursuing Big Game

No person may allow their dog to chase or kill big game. Between January 1 and July 14 a dog that is observed wounding, killing, or pursuing in a way that endangers big game may be killed by any person. A peace officer or conservation officer may kill a dog that endangers big game any time of the year. The office or person is not liable for damages for killing the dog.

Important: Other hunting seasons are open before, during, and after the deer season. Many hunters use dogs to hunt upland game, waterfowl, rabbits, raccoons, foxes, and coyotes. Dogs may NOT be shot during fall hunting seasons, even if it is seen pursuing big game, except by a conservation pr peace officer.

If they shot and killed a dog they can be prosecuted. Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

Thanks that's what I thought.Hopefully my neighbor will pursue this even if it was only a "farm dog".One of our Brittany's went missing about a month ago and with people like this around I'm doubting the theft possability more so now.Wonder how many dogs go down each year during deer season uneccesarily.

Please urge your neighbor to follow up on this. And write down everything you can remember about the incident. It sounds to me, according to your description of the event, like the dog was killed by a couple jerks! Just what today's sportsmen need, more guys like that in the field. Jeez, there are enough of them now!!
