How high to block a permamnent ice house

I am preparing for a new season with a 7' X 10' ice house on runners. Does anyone have any suggestions on the optimal size of wood blocks to use when blocking the house up off the ice? I have some heavy 4"x4"timber blocks that I can use, as well as the standard landscape timbers and the old stand by - 2" x 4"'s.

I dont want to unnecessarily block the house up to high, but want to make sure I properly protect it from freezing into the ice. The house will be on Leech Lake and subject to high winds and excessive drifting.

Are you going to block it up while you are fishing or only while you are gone? Are your runners metal or wood?

I have always had a metal framed shack. Drop the frame onto the ice while fishing. When you go to leave a 3/4" piece of board at each corner will work just fine. Use a pry bar or whatever to lift it up just a little to get the board under it. If that is froze in next time you come, no problems. You can fish with it that way and add another when you go to leave that time. Just chip the boards out when you move your shack so their is no litter on the ice.

The closer to the ice is better, less chance for a draft and closer to the ice so it is easier to grab all those fish you pull through the hole!!

Muskyfshntchr.... Thanks for the quick reply. My runners are 2"x*8"'s but I have now attached to them a custom made set of metal skis that are essentially snowmobile skis that run the whole length of the fish house. I want to avoid getting these add-on runners frozen in a pool of hardened slush. I am more interested in learning the best block size for leaving it on when I am away from the house.

.Maybe I should block it up high on the 4"x4" timbers when I leave the cabin and use a 3/4" board during my periods of active use.

Duck2, that's what I do. If I'm not going to be back to the house for 4-5 days, I raise it up 4" just to be safe. Of course, a lot depends upon ice thickness, how much snow is on top of the ice, and the forecast!!! grin.gifgrin.gif Then, I just lower it when I fish. Better than trying to chip it out when it's frozen down. mad.gif

I block my 7'x12' on skids up on 4x4s and that has worked just fine for the couple winters I've had the shack. My skids are 4"x6" 14' long and I just put a 4x4 at each corner. I use a Hi-Lift jack to get the house up high enough to slide the blocking underneath.

I left my shack in one place all last winter on Upper Red and the blocking was nearly frozen in when we took it off. Lots & lots of chipping with the spud bar to pop them out of the ice! A lot easier than chipping out the house however!

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
