Cats and snags

I prefer to fish upstream and to the outside of a snag.I always seem to catch more fish there.I have fish with lots of guys who pitch there baits right up underneath the snags and I still do better. The active fish hold in the current edge created by the snag or the hole that the current going around the snag creates.I have also noticed that not all snags will hold fish. The ones that have little or no current and have soft muddy bottoms under them are not productive. In general the ones that have moderate current with rock or at least hard sand produce many more fish. They are also better if they are close to the main channel with the root wad in the water and not the top of the tree.In late summer I have had lots of success with mid river snags in fast water. In this situation I fish directly ahead of the snag or behind it.

I understand how catfish and snags go together, but where are the cats laying? down current? under a fallin tree? does a tree sink or float when in the river? could someone shed some light on the situation. I'm not rich, I can't afford to replace tackle at the rate I'm going with no fish!

Hey ozzy, I know of a real nice bait shop to replenish your tackle at. They have a good selection of catfishing gear, good prices and the manager there is really helpfull.

BigDave2,
where's your tackle shop? I go to 169 Sports in Belle Plaine. They have a good selection of cat gear and live bait, they are trying to get a supplier for creek chubs also. Just opened last fall. check it out!
