Spear Houses?

I am looking into getting a new portable fish house for spearing. I have a Mankato, but the thing is so old and falling apart that its tuff to take it out on the ice. What brands are people buying, or what brands are the best when it comes to dark houses?

I would check with Canvas Craft up in Anoka for their 4' X 8' spear house. Very nice dark suitcase style house.

Or you could have them make a cover for something like an Otter. I spear out my Otter Lodge and it is pretty dark with the purple canvas but not as dark as the Canvas Craft house.

Early Riser, do you lay carpet or something down on the ice around your hole? I have a black suitcase stlye I use for spearing and always wondered if the excess ice around your hole would give off to much light in an otter. Thanks

I have a mankato, and i have carpet around the floor through out the house. I feel for myself that it helps to hold the darkness in the house.

I feel that the light from cracks around the windows is what has the potential to spook fish. I know that if one is comming in straight on, they can see movement inside the house pretty well. I may experiment with velcro around the whole window. I have tried carpet on the ice but it tends to get a little saturated with water. I do bring a few thin sheets of plywood to set around the sides of the hole. I usually remeber to wear ice grips on my boots because that ice gets slick around the hole.

Duck tape works just as well. LOL

I tried good old duct tape. It seemed to work for a short time before falling off. The other idea I had was velcro strips all the way around the windows.

So Are you going to sow them on to the house it self?

Yes I have been thinking about doing just that - sewing them.
