Got out this morning for a few hours. Speared one that was 29" at 7:55. She slammed a red/white decoy I had down about three feet.

Speared another smaller one at about 10:30 that came in on the bottom and just layed there under the decoy.

Then at 11:00 I had a pretty big one (10-12lbs) fly in and plaster the old red/white while I was swimming the decoy up high and fast. I pulled the fish and decoy back into the hole before she let go. She then came right back in and took another swipe. I Didn't throw the spear - too big a fish for the size I like to fry up.

Like you guys I will spear the smaller fish for eating and wait for a really big one.

Keep the spear on your shoulder and run your decoys high. Then sit back enjoy the view, the anticipation and maybe some action. I hope my story brings you guys some fond memories of darkhouse action you have experienced grin.gif

I got out this morning armed with spear and a rod I put the decoy down and didnt even take the guard off the spear and thought I'd try to jig one up with a rattelin rap and boy that was cool had three fish go after it but no hits then I put on a red and white spoon and on the third jig a three pounder slammed it what a rush then about ten mineutes later I went two foot deeper with the spoon and was jigging very aggressavily and pow another one slammed it this one was about five pounds. I'm going to be trying a lot of other stuff as the season goes . got to love the spear hole for fishin out of .

I put my permanent spear house out a week ago sat.up here on the Iron Range,I had six inchs of good clear ice By tuesday afternoon with the rain and warm air I had water running in the hole,I didnt go wensday,Nightmares all night about my house sinking! What a releaf to see it was OK on thursday, good thing for plenty of blocking. Now theres about two inchs of white (poor)ice ontop of five good inchs so I think we will be OK on the range! There is no snow to bank house so were just angling and keeping fresh pan of venison on the wood stove while we work(I hate that word!)at filling the bucket with pike, crappies and maybe an eye or two!Ah!live is good but RETIRERMENT is LIVING!! PS if we dont get hammered with lots of snow for a week or two I think the ice will be fine!

Was talking to one of my buddies last night on the phone, and he was saying that when he was out on the ice, he was saying that within 3 hrs of the time that he was sitting there for about 5, he told me he saw over 15 pike, not saying that there not all the same fish, along with 5 muskies. Thats pretty crazy for one person to see all that.

thats the way it is when you get into just the right area. when they go on a feeding spree they are hungry. with all the clear ice and the brightness of the sun, the northerns are in the weeds and don't feed as much. so when they come out you will see them. what your friend said is the way it is on the lake im spearing now.

Was out today. Set up on a break line at about 11 feet. Water was clear enuf that i would have been able to set up in 20 lol. But, after i was set up, i saw nothing but pan fish and some bass, but within 2 hours, a 28.5 came flying in, hitting my live decoy. He had it in his mouth when i hit him with the spear.

After the whole cleared up, with in 20 mins, another one came in. He tryed to hit my live decoy unber my fake one, and missed it. I didnt get to throw at him becuase he was out of the whole. I could see him in the distance by laying on the floor of the house. He came back really slow, when he opened his mouth, i hit him wihtt he spear. 38.5 Nice fish. Had a great day on the ice. And i look forward to hitting to road tommorrow, for the trip up to cass. Good Fishing.

Just got back from cass lake area tonight. The lake that we were on was not as clear as years past, but we made it work. The fish were very very aggresive, so we were using live decoys with the fake decoy. 90% of the time, the pike would come in and hit that live decoy. We had 7 guys up on the trip, biggest fish was 36 inches long. Ill try and get some pics up tommorow. Good Fishing!!

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
