english setter ear infection problem

i have a 9 yr. old english setter female that has had ear infections from a 1 year old i have brougt her to the vet numorous times (15 approx) over the last 8 years they continue to tell me this is a common with this breed.

how ever i have a 3 yr old male setter that has not had a problem yet. my local vet has prescribed OtoMax as well as another product called Gentocin both seemed to work at first but have proven to be useless after awhile

i was under the imppression that OtoMax is used for yeast type infections while Gentocin is used for Bacterial infections any other products i could reccomend to my vet?

Setterguy knows quite a bit about this problem. I can't recall the whole story, but he had some ear infection issues with one of his dogs. There was some other underlying problem and once it was diagnosed properly and treated the ear infections cleared up.

Ironically enough the dog that had the ear problems wasn't my setter but my 11 year old Vizsla. He had infections since he was a pup, went to various vets and all did the same thing, treated the infection. It would go away and then eventually come back. Poor dog, his ears were constantly in pain and while I treated them, I'm sure they were constantly sore. Finally one vet said to me, " Well yes he does have infections but what is causing them is an ulcer in his ears." Once we treated the ulcer he hasn't had an infection in over 8 years. My setter occasionally gets infections, most of the time when a seed or piece of grass makes its way into the ear canal while hunting or training. I try to do an ear flush after a run in the woods or field to dislodge any debris that may have made its way into the ear. Moral of the story I guess is always get a second opinion on a problem with your dog. I always figured that the vets knew what they were doing, I guess that wasn't the case.

I have a golden retriever that has had ear infections on and off. OtoMax has worked, as well as some other ointments. One of the keys I have found is to use the ear rinse/flush whenever he's been out in the rain/snow, and his ears might get wet. That has helped prevent a recurrence.
