I noticed earlier today in one of my many mapbooks that a few southern MN lakes have had flatheads stocked in them to control other populations of fish. That might be something worth checking out, giving a guy a change of pace from fishing flowing water.Any tips to add here for flats or channels cats,in lakes?

I've posted earlier that they stocked channels in Big Kandiyohi Lake which is SE of Willmar, MN. They are up to 23lbs or better. They were put in there to help control the rough fish (carp). They are fun to catch, a friend of mine caught some this weekend out there. The catfish tournament is coming up Aug. 11th. Check the Willmar area forum for more info. Here "kitty kitty"!!

I HEARD SOME GUYS WERE GETTING SOME NICE RUNS BUT NOT HOOKING TOO MANY.
HEY DOUBLEUCUBED, MY FOLKS LIVE JUST A MILE SOUTH OF LAKE LILLIAN SO I SPEND SOME TIME OUT THAT WAY........MAYBE HOOK UP SOME TIME? IT WOULD BE FUN TO HIT THAT BIG KANDI CONTEST BUT I'LL BE UP NEAR FERGUS FALLS THAT WEEK (CATCHING SMALLIES ETC.)

Guys,

There are three lakes with flatheads down your way. I'll have to look again to find the names. All were stocked to control bullhead populations. But none of these lakes have been stocked with flatsies since the late 70s / early 80s.

The DNR fellas I talked to about these lakes last year said it wasn't worth the bother. Well . . . think it might be interesting to find out for ourselves, eh? I'll try and dig up the info and get back to you.

I heard a fishing report from a guy at work a couple days ago. He said that he had fished a night on the Crow River by Hanover, and caught a 8 and a 12 lb. channel cat.I did not get any particulars, such as bait used, or anything like that. Not a bad catch at all, from a small river like the Crow.

My old work partner lives in Howard lake and fishes the Crow near there.Says he gets channels in the 10 lb range on a regular basis. He says they hit spinners and jigs that he's using to catch walleyes. Its amazing that such small waters can produce such big fish.
I sure wish I could get out this week to do some cattin but I am so busy trying to get things done so I can go play on Ottertail this saturday.Next week I WILL GO CATFISHING!

Dark30, On your way up North you better stop in around your folks place and load up on the "sweet corn"! The stuff is just about ready to go big time! Nothing better than the "supersweet" and "peaches and cream". Too bad you can't make the tourney. I'll get some pictures and post after the 11th. Sure is hot out today!!

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
